Konami Supports Revolution

According to ign.com Konami is planning big things for next generation. All three next generation systems will have 1 of 2 "flagship games" from the company. In comments shared with Japan's Weekly Toyo Keizai, Kazuya Takahashi (President, Online Company) and Michihiro Ishizuka (President, Computer & Video Games Company) showed that the company plans on producing games that will make use of each systems "unique specifications" which either means they will be exclusive to each system or that they will make special changes to tailor gameplay for each system. As far as multiplatform support, Konami says that "titles that don't require full hardware specifications will be released as multiplatform titles, including the PC."

More news as it comes.

Chaos Theory's IGN review.

DSIGN recently reviewed the dual-screen installment of the stealth title, and they gave it a 6.0/10. Among their complaints for the game were a lackluster multiplayer, overly complex controls, and choppy framerate. Of course, this is just one gamer's opinion on the title, so take it with a grain of salt. The full review is here.

NESTER ON YOUR DS!

A guy by the name of Rich Witehouse has ported the "Nester" Nintendo Entertainment System emulator to the Nintendo DS. Here's a small portion of the included readme file.

This is a DS port of Nester. As you might've guessed. There are a ton of issues, and it still bothers me that I'm storing the NES ROM over in ewram. I need to look into that gbfs stuff apparently. There is no sound (the APU stuff is hooked up and runs fine on the DS, it just needs the DS to actually do something with the output), but the games I've tried run ok speed-wise. There is some "scanline"-type rendering optimizaton in place because that's all still very slow and I haven't taken advantage of any DS-specific hardware features to speed it up.

I'm a huge fan of the Nintendo Entertainment System, so this comes as great news for me and I can't wait to see what the future brings for this emulator.

New DS shooter...with WiFi!

Looks like Nanostray won't be the only sci-fi DS shooter, because now Neo-Pong is in development of a game called World Reborn: Unification.

NintendoNow.com is proud to present the world exclusive debut of a promising new DS title from NeoPong Software, Inc. World Reborn: Unification, the sequel to the upcoming World Reborn for Game Boy Advance, is an all new online enabled RPG/shooter for the Nintendo DS. This title will take you back to your old school roots as you embark on a highly stylized, engrossing Sci-Fi tale. Below you will find the official press release, early screenshots, and music downloads for World Reborn: Unification.

The evil Biotech forces that enslaved humanity have been defeated (*see World Reborn for the Gameboy Advance, Q3 2005) and the companions, finally able to rest, have settled down and begun the process of rebuilding civilization. Thiel and Mei have wed and given birth to a child. Perrin and Freya have rebuilt the impressive sky civilization and Richter, one of the former Judge computers, has happily filled the role of advisor to the new leaders.

Disproving the Judge computer’s doom-filled prophecy of mankind’s self-induced destruction, the heroes seem to have achieved worldwide peace and mankind is flourishing again. It is on a peaceful afternoon outing that Thiel and his family suddenly find themselves thrust into the middle of an erupting violence from a new and unknown aggressor. Not willing to watch all he has worked for be destroyed, Thiel once again calls his comrades to arms and a new battle begins to save the planet from an alien threat!

In World Reborn: Unification, Thiel will once more take on a valiant quest to push back an invading alien force. He will travel with old comrades and meet new friends who will join the cause. The original ships are back with improvements as well as two entirely new ships with unique abilities of their own. This time the plot runs deep as the player will engage on one of two completely different paths that will allow for maximum replayability and unique experiences.

World Reborn: Unification expands upon an already diverse array of weaponry and offers the player two firing modes on their primary weapon, a selection of secondary weapons, a new assortment of interchangeable special abilities, combo power-ups (rewards for a successful string of kills) and various super-shots.

Thanks to the innovative new technology offered by the Nintendo DS, World Reborn: Unification will allow players to hook up online to play in simultaneous cooperative mode and compare scores via an online ranking system.

The touch pad allows the player to switch out special abilities, firing modes, and secondary weapons on the fly. The boss battles in World Reborn: Unification differ from the common shooter battles that involve holding down the fire button. Instead, players must use their various abilities in their inventory to expose the boss’s weakness to defeat him!

As with its predecessor, World Reborn: Unification focuses on classic 2D gameplay, witty dialogue and revitalizing old school gaming. The graphics feature high color, detailed 2D sprites and vibrant backgrounds. Levels are expansive, require exploration and contain many secrets. Difficulty levels are implemented to permit gameplay from casual gamers to hardcore enthusiasts.

    · WiFi support allows for multiplayer cooperative action.
    · High-color, detailed sprites and backgrounds recreate the look of classic gaming while blending 3D effects such as parallax, particle systems, matrix rotations and scaling!
    · 14 massive levels allowing for exploration of some of the broadest levels in the genre.
    · Combinations of horizontal and vertical levels create an intense and dynamic experience.
    · 6 Unique Pilots and Ships: Create your own combination of ship and pilot to best match your playing style!
    · Various equipable special abilities, firing modes and secondary weapons allow for a variety of combinations!
    · Branching storyline unfolds depending on your actions: play the game again and again to find out what happens if you take a different path!
    · Map selection system allows you to select where you go next: encourages you to explore and choose your own destiny!
    · Save system lets you pick up where you left off with ease!

It seems that Sony's first hand-held to enter the market is not doing nearly as well as Sony's analysts first thought. The less technically impressive Nintendo DS has been outselling both the Sony PSP hand-held and and the Sony PlayStation 2 home console combined!

It seems like Sony is a stick in the mud here. Post your comments!

Lucas Arts to support DS and the Revolution

In an interview, President of LucasArts, Jim Ward commented that the company will be developing titles for all next gen consoles including the Nintendo DS. Ward says, "We learned it the hard way. We celebrate all new platforms, we will support all new platforms, and we will be on all platforms. When you watch a game, we will do it on all of them as best as we can. You can surely talk about all those pros and cons but to the degree that consumers buy a certain platform, we want to make sure that there is a LucasArts game for it."

The company didn't reveal any title for the Nintendo DS, but Ward confirmed,"[We] have a number of other titles in development that we haven't announced on PSP and DS, this is a fantastic market."

Press conference:DS online and new Revolution details

In a press conference in Japan, Nintendo's President, Satoru Iwata and the creator of Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto commented about new details about the Revolution and DS online. Nintendo confirmed that the downloadable games will come with a fee over the Revolution's downloadable service, and Nintendo stated that there will be some games that will be free for a limited time offer deal, but Nintendo didn't confirm many games will be availaible for downloading through the service.

The Revolution's hardware will feature a built-in flash memory capacity of 512MB, letting gamers download or save games as much as possible to the Revolution. Nintendo also announced that they will be selling SD memory cards to allow gamers to store more game data. There are SD card in the market that store up to 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, and even 1GB. Nintendo didn't state any price for the SD cards.
Nintendo hinted that Revolution could have firmware upgrade for the internal flash memrory; on this topic, Nintendo chosen the internal flash memrory over the hard drive, because a hard drive can be easily damaged being dropped. Iwata-san stressed that the final design of the revolution will be smaller will not use that much power.

In the Japanese magazine, Famitsu confirmed that Nintendo will be making an UBS network adapter can be hooked to the PC and will act as an access point for the Nintendo DS and the Revolution. No details were given about this.
Miyamoto-san commented how Nintendo invested their time about the mysterious Revolution controller, and Iwata-san said,"I think you will be surprised by the Revolution's controller."
Miyamoto-san also stated,"We're at a stage where we're adding and removing various kinds of functions, which has been very fun," he said. Miyamoto went on to say that Nintendo's main cause for removing functions is concern that the controller could become too complex, making gameplay overly difficult." "The Revolution will have an interesting interface. We're investing a lot of money into the [development of the] interface, and it's still not finalized."

In software, Nintendo also stated that the Revolution will have small-budgeted, simple video games like Nintendo's franchise.
Before the end of the press conference, Nintendo talked about the Nintendo DS' online service by saying that they plan to install 1,000 free WiFi hotspots throughout Japan, Nintendo commented they will have Mario Kart and Animal Crossing Wifi ready later this year.

      Nanostray Devoloper interview

Nintendo Insider recently held an interview with Shin'en co founder Manfred Linzner. The interview goes over new gameplay features as well as the graphical Capabilities of the DS. Here's a summary of the new information he revealed in the interview.

-The touch screen will only be used for quick actions, not major gameplay additions(selecting weapons and radar use).
-The radar will be used mainly to scan bosses for weak points.
-There will be 2 main gameplay modes, CHALLENGE and ADVENTURE.
-The multiplayer game modes include SUDDEN DEATH, TIMEOUT, BONUSRACE and SCORE ATTACK.
-The game will run on Shin'en's own DSX sound engine to produce around an hour of near CD quality sound.
-The game will have high resolution textures and high polygon counts to show off the technical ability of the DS.

You can veiw the entire interveiw here.
