DS PDA, GBE Launch?

Before you read on. Note the first half is stricktly news the second half is my speculation.

According to www.spong.com Nintendo will be making the most aggressive move in handheld gaming history. Apparently Nintendo will show off the gb2, otherwise known as game boy evolution at this years E3 expo. Many things were confirmed that no one really thought would be announced till at least e3 2006. It seems that the DS will have a PDA OS produced by Nintendo, As well as that the GBE will have revolution connectivity that will expand upon what was done with the GBA. Also, The GBE will be based off of, possibly identical to Gamecube technology.

That said here’s my insight on the situation. Click Here.

Wifi?

According to Kotaku, Nintendo is preparing a launch of the Nintendo DS WiFi service as well as an unseen DivX rollout. Kotaku's source says that there is no word on where the hotspots will be located and that there is no solid release date because the protocol still has minor issues.

Redirecting to DivX, apparently the media will be stored on DS cartridges and should be able to hold power for a couple hours. It's quite strange however considering Nintendo's direction of the Play-Yan. Why abandon it? Whether you question the legitimacy of this, something is bound to happen soon with WiFi.

Rayman Movie and Pokemon Rumour

It appears that a new Rayman DS movie has surfaced and you can see it HERE.

Also according to the latest issue of Nihon Keizai Shimbun (a Japanese magazine) Pokemon Diamond and Pearl are scheduled to be released in November 2005 in Japan. By this marker it would be reasonable to suspect that the game would launch in North American and Europe around March of 2006. Nothing has been confirmed by Nintendo though so it'a all just speculation for the time being.

Play Yan Recall

It seems that only days after it's launch in Japan, the Play-Yan has encountered an overlooked problem: Reverse sound output. While this would be very unnoticable in many cases, Nintendo will be replacing the Play-Yan device for all those who purchased it. According to the e-mail, a replacement is being readied for delivery on 3/5. In order to get the replacement, you'll have to give the broken unit to the courier who delivers the item. A special thanks to SpeedBrkr for

Iwata Speaks

Over at Spong, a well pieced article and exclusive interview with Nintendo's president can be found. The Nintendo DS is continually brought up in this with great information. Here's some of the following:

Speaking of momentum, the PSP has launched in Japan though has been met with supply problems. Right now the DS is outselling Sony's machine, though whether this can this be sustained once the PSP product flow has been eased is an issue Nintendo, and its armies or spin doctors, need to address. "There are two things here you need to understand," asserts the Nintendo president. "Number one; Sales of the DS have never slowed, even with the launch of the PSP. And the second
thing is; even though Sony claims it would have sold more given one circumstance or another, the situation is pretty much similar with the DS. At various points, if we had have had more product on store shelves, we would be boasting even bigger sales than we are today. So that argument from Sony is invalid." Tough talking indeed.

Of course, there are MANY more things brought up in this fantastic interview, so without hesitation, go to Spong.com and read the rest!

Zelda News

Zelda news, and who better to post it? Anyways there was a recent interview with Eiji Aonuma, a Zelda developer, and he said alot about the upcoming DS and Gamecube Zelda games. Below is the translation of a quote.

'There will be without any doubt Zelda for the DS. In fact, you appear that the reflexions which we developed around Four Swords largely contributed to the reflexion which we had to conceive the DS. The concepts with work in Four Swords formed part of the examples that we experienced while thinking on the possible plays for the DS and the advantages that the double screen allows. It was theoretical but today, it would be very a shame, and even ashamed, that one does not make the opposite demonstration: a truth good Zelda on DS. The next episode of Zelda conceived for GameCube is already completed but I can absolutely nothing say some moreover. You know the house: even the title and the topic are still secret. This next large Zelda, which makes continuation with the WindWaker episode chronologically, will leave to Japan at at the end of 2005. I am engaged to 200 % in his development and I can betray one secrecy of it: it will be very, very beautiful.'

To be fair, that quote looked smaller when I read it. Anyways it is good to hear about Zelda whatever the news.

Monkey Island DS

UPDATE: It seems as if this is all one lie generated from a forum. If you wish to view more information about it, head to gba.n64europe.com.
Sorry for the misunderstanding!
In a recent European interview with Lucas Arts, it has been discovered they been testing out the development kits for most of the upcoming consoles (and handhelds). In this testing, they have undergone some early work for Monkey Island 3 on the Nintendo DS. Lucas Arts stated that with the particular design of the DS and it's gameplay mechanisms, a lot of older games or possibly cancelled projects could be ported. While the screenshots are supposedly authentic, Lucas Arts claimed the game is only at experimental phase and could be cancelled at any given time.

Nanostray Details

Recently, PlanetDS.de had the time to sit down with Manfred Linzer, a developer for the upcoming game, Nanostray. While the interview was entirely in German, many new details emerged:

-Graphics for Nanostray will not be compared to SNES shooters, but instead to shooters like IKARUGA. Nanostray is expected to be the DS' finest showing yet with a solid 60 frames per second (FPS) throughout gameplay.

-There will be no pre-rendering. Everything will be real-time.

-The game is sceduled to support multiplayer through one game cartridge. Also mentioned is the possibility of an online ranking system.

-The Nintendo DS' touch screen will be utilized in many ways, including selecting of the weapons, scanning of opponents, scanning of the environment and all status information.

Manfred also mentioned that developing is much easier for the Nintendo DS than the GameBoy Advance.

Now in the logo the text is basically identical to the logo text for the DS. Some are speculating that the "v" stands for video. It looks like the Dutch may know a little more than we do about upcomgin Nintendo DS titles. Devilish was a game on the Sega Game Gear is now being remade for the DS. The game is a dark horror style game. It will be published by Starfish in Japan and will include multiplayer, and use of the touch screen. There is no word on a North American release date.

PSP Price and Date

The PSP now has a North American price and launch date. For $249.99 on March 24th you'll get the equivalent of the Japanese PSP Value Pack, which includes the PSP, a battery pack, an AC adaptor, a 32MB Memory Stick Duo, headphones fitted with a remote control, a soft carrying case, a cleaning cloth and a sample UMD with non-playable game demos. Also the first million buyers will get a copy of Spiderman 2 on UMD. The price also translates into $310 CND (before taxes). The price is higher, but it also launches with 24 games. Even with UMD movies, I don't think that movies on the PSP will become large sellers. How will Nintendo respond to the news, will we see a DS price drop? Time will tell...

Nintendo Polls for Revolution

Nintendo is now polling on thier forums for the games that people would like to see on Nintendo Revolution. The possible options for voting are:
-More M-rated games. Please
-All new franchises and characters for my age group.
-Mario, Mario, and more Mario
-I'd like more T-rated games. No more kiddie titles

This is good for Nintendo, although I do not think that the options cover the full range of what gamers want though. Perhaps an option such as 'New franchises and the classics to go with it'. Either way it is good to see that Nintendo is looking towards thier next generation console and polling the gamers to see what they want.

Polarium Delayed

Nintendo has pushed back Polarium (One-Line Puzzle's) date up April 18th, 2005. Japanese gamers got to play this game back in December. So the question is, why is it being delayed here in the US? There is almost no translation needed, and the game itself doesn't have to change at all to come over here, so this leaves gamers wondering about the delay. Polarium is also currently off the Nintendo.com gamelist, whether it be permanent or temporary we will have to see.

Game Informer Interviews Castlevania Developer

Game Informer have just posted an interesting interview with Koji Igarashi, the main man when it comes to the Castlevania series. The interview covers the upcoming Castlevania game for the Nintendo DS and hints at some interesting things. What got my attention was this little quote:

"GI: We played the demo and I was wondering, outside of the sealing of the bosses and the removal of the boxes with the touch screen, is there anything else you do with the touch screen?

Iga:  I don’t want to reveal too much too early, but it’s used in various places throughout the game (laughs).  There is one more thing that uses it, but I haven’t told anyone about it yet.  I’m not going to say what it is, but it’s in there. (laughs)"

Update: Gamespot has a new video interview with Koji Igarashi which you can see here.

No special DS for Europe

A few days ago, the web was buzzing with rumors speculating whether or not the European DS will wake from sleep mode if encountered by another DS in range. The rumor was based upon the following exerpt from the European Nintendo DS website: "The Nintendo DS, when in sleep mode, will spring to life if it senses another DS transmitting in range, alerting users that someone wants to chat or play games with them!"

GBA.N64Europe have the official word from Nintendo:

"Unfortunately, Nintendo BeNeLux replied to us that the feature will not be included in the European DS units. Furthermore, Nintendo told us that the original plans indeed included the feature of notifying a user when a DS comes within range, however at a later point the decision was made not to do so (as we reported earlier)."

So it looks like there will be no advanced Nintendo DS for Europe after all, sorry chaps :).
