Research: DS over PSP once again

WaveMetrix reports that the Nintendo DS is much better than the Sony PSP."DS is better than PSP in every important area."

"Customers say the DS beats the PSP hands down in each of the areas that concern them most: games, device quality and screen. Furthermore, gamers find the DS superior value as it is substantially cheaper than the rival PSP. Sony’s impressive marketing campaign for the PSP has put it at the forefront of customer minds; it is discussed twice as frequently as the DS. Perhaps surprisingly this has not fed through to customer satisfaction."

I got one word for ya...

HYPE

Not saying the PSP is bad, but hype rather than quality has sold more units. More people know the PSP name although the DS is the one with the intriguing gameplay and more possibilities.

I dont know man. I think the DS has/had a lot going for it in terms of hype.

The DS launched months before the mainstream market knew about the PSP and Nintendo spent a lot of money advertising the DS. We remember reading press snippets "NINTENDO IS SPENDING MOST ADVERTISING MONEY EVER ON NINTENDO DS". Simply said, Nintendo has the money to do it, and they finally did. For those who knew that the Game Boy and GBA were a success, it was not hard to migrate to the DS. For those who wanted revolutionary play, while still keeping the traditional franchise (mario, etC) and for those who were skeptical with Nintendo's "kid" reputation, the slogan completely burned that to the ground. Touching is Good.

I'm very suprised that the Nintendo DS sold so well in the US on so little. In Japan, the DS has been nothing short of phenominal, but had the Japanese launch been as week as the US launch, I can guarentee it would be a different story altogether.

PSP has too much to lose, so Sony is going to have a difficult time managing any gain whatsoever. Funny how the PSP's proprietary movie library exceeds the number of their games, yet sell a small, small fraction of that amount. That's sad Sony. Real sad.

Absolutely don't get me wrong though. While the PSP and the DS both had hype, the Nintendo DS is living up to it's hype as the months pass (and that's very important). The longer we wait, the better games we see. With the PSP from day one, we aren't going to see much of an increase of innovation as the technology and the gameplay mechanics have already been around for 6 years. There's nothing new about it, it's just compact.

I love my DS.
I believe it is suppiour to the PSP as a portable machine (Games, Orginality, Battary, Durability)

But to say it has the better screen is simple dillusional.

You better believe more people know the PSP name? Please don't tell me that wherever you live more people know DS cuz I'll tell you that you're crazy. I've been a Nintendo fan for over 20 years and I love my DS (do not have a PSP). But the fact is that no matter how much Nintendo has spent in advertising, not enough people know what it is in comparison to the PSP. I've heard old people (and seem them with one)talk about the PSP. NOBODY KNOW THE DS NAME BESIDES GAMERS. EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT A PSP IS. I CAN'T REPEAT IS ENOUGH!

Now, I'm saying "Hype" is a bad thing and am not saying hype is advertising either. I mean that although Sony has sold many PSP units, it was because of hype rather than because it was a great system. Hype is a lot of talk about something that wont live up to the hype standard. DS doesn't have hype it has good advertising and it deserves the marks it gets. PSP get's high marks for being able to play MP3, expensive movies, etc... HYPE. It's not as good as advertised, although it may be good.

Now back to my original point.
The DS is a clear winner in Japan so far and here it is holding it's own against the PSP(although in May the PSP outsold U.S. DSs by four times as many units). Regardless of my opinion or the success of the DS, more Americans know what a PSP is and I don't have anything to back that statement up with anything other than IT'S TRUE!
Outside the Nintendo world, not many people have heard of the DS and even the guys at the game stores still don't sell it with pride like they do the PSP. When everybody goes home though, they bust out their DSs and play Meteos.

"Will the real fanBoys please stand up, please stand up! "

there is NO WAY the PSP has a worse screen than the DS ! GIVE me a breake! Only blind and retarded fany boys can pretend to beleive that BS. AND also the GRAPHICS are WAY better on PSP. And to casual gameres garaphics and screen and hype are most important.

BUT the 2 screens on DS is cool idea on the DS better than PSP!
AND the Batteries are waaayyyy better on DS then PSP!
AND the quality of the handhelkd device is Better on DS than PSP! MY name for you SLOW PEOPLE is a joke by the way!!!!

BUT I can watch movies on the PSP, play more complex games with better graphics and music and sound.

then again the PSP is expensive as hell!
ANd you get 2 systems in one with DS AND GBA!

SO its a tie in my opinion, in next year the GAMES will Determine who wins out in sales.
ASLO if PSP drops in price, DS is in trouble because of all the people who know PSP by name, and there are LOTS more than DS !

This is about as unscientific a study as you can get. This isn't worth being an article on this site. It's a tabulation of message board arguments!

Gannon, you misunderstood me. I'm saying that the DS has also fallen into to hype, and hype is not at all a bad thing. It gets people excited. The bad thing results when the hype turns into disapointed (ie. See anything to do with the Nintendo Revolution this E3)

Now, people know about the PSP, and they are keen to it. But it's 250 dollars. That's a lot of money. There's a big reason for your lack of market. The other reason is, the Nintendo DS is out for half the money, and the gameplay experience is unlike anything ever before.

AND PSPQC, how many times does this have to be stated. The DS battery isn't better than the PSP battery.

The PSP has a powerful processor, disk-system, large BACKLIT screen and stereo speakers. The biggest reason is the disk. If games require the disk to be constantly read (like a movie), then the battery will wear quicker. The Nintendo DS does not have this, thus much of it's battery power can be dedicated to other things.

Make no assumption, the DS battery is much more inferior to the PSP battery. Want to buy a spare Nintendo DS battery? 10 dollars. Spare PSP battery? 30 dollars.

Yes, yes.
The DS battery is not as fancy as the PSP.
WHO GIVES A SHITY SHIT =)

you know what I mean! Battery LIFE of 5 hours for my PSP vs 12 for my DS. Thats why the PSP battery life is shit.

Sorry, I mean battery "life" is shit on PSP not the battery, but most gamers dont give shit about the battery, JUST how long it LASTS.

right?

But unlike some fanboys here, I see good things about the PSP.

You shouldn't need a survey or study to determine which one is better. I own both. They have their pros and cons. I went traveling for 3 months for work. I would leave and return to home throughout the months. I only had the means to take one of them because I had work stuff to take too. I took the PSP on more trips than I did with the DS.

Hm...good news, good news.

I think what they mean by "better screen" is not just the quality and resolution and stuff. The DS has 2 of 'em, one with touch sensitivity and they both have nice graaphics. Not as good as PSP's graphics, but still quite good. :)
