Wifi?
According to Kotaku, Nintendo is preparing a launch of the Nintendo DS WiFi service as well as an unseen DivX rollout. Kotaku's source says that there is no word on where the hotspots will be located and that there is no solid release date because the protocol still has minor issues.Redirecting to DivX, apparently the media will be stored on DS cartridges and should be able to hold power for a couple hours. It's quite strange however considering Nintendo's direction of the Play-Yan. Why abandon it? Whether you question the legitimacy of this, something is bound to happen soon with WiFi.

I don't think Nintendo is abandoning Play-yan.......Play-yan also stores media on DS cards, it probably only hooks into the GBA cartridge so that it works with the GBA. So who knows.
I don't really like the idea of hot spots. I mean as much as the ds is a mobile device, i stiil play it the most at home, and i doubt that Nintendo will roll out enough hotspots so that i could sit at home and play online. If they go with a usb adaptor that restricts you to having access only when you are at home or are near a suitably equipped hotspot. But gba cart that can connect to any hotspot over tcp/ip that would be cool.
If true, theres no conflict with the Play Yen really;
This is specificaly for DS, and will have Films/Media released in a non-writeable, perminate format.
(like buying a DVD from a shop).
PlayYen is for the GBA and is rewriteable, but you cant dump your own movies onto it.
(at least, not without a hack, rip, ect..)
I dont see the fuss about all this too be honest.
Saleing cartoons on the GBA carts did Majesco ok.
But the market feature films in "portable format" I think is tiny.
Who wants to have 2 film collections? One for Home and One for on the move? Waste of money.
You can get a portable DVD player for £80 so that will be cheaper then rebuying your whole collection.
Sony chargeing full DVD prices for lower-res portable UMD films is just stupid.
Maybe people will buy 1 for a test, but it wont become anywhere near mainstream.
If these DSivx cards are the same price then they wont catch on either.
That said;
My GBA Movie Player; A very cool unofficial device that lets you watch MP3 and MPeg from compact flash....is very very cool and well used.
About Wi-Fi;
I am all for gameing hotstops and downloads.
It wont stop companys makeing DS games online at home, for people with wi-fi networks/cards.
But it would give them a "push" to get people buying them.
Nintendo should also make their own Wi-Fi card. (not that the DS needs a specific one, but a Nintendo-branding one would drive the message home).
well. the WiFi is an awesome Idea, the latest news, Wireless adapters which connect to your PC and to your DS to enable your Ds's WiFi.
i think its just an big bussiness idea to either buy more games or buy most likekley a expencive wifi adapter but most fanboys will buy,buy,buy
