Zelda Four Swords coming to DS

I found this great news on Gamecube Europe,"Spainish official Nintendo magazine, Club Nintendo, had recently an interview with Mr. Eiji Aonuma, one of the main developers of the Zelda franchise. In the interview, he confirmed that the Zelda team is already planning to bring the Four Swords to the Nintendo DS platform. He also added that the game will feature connectivity and a lot of interaction between the two screens.

Having in mind Gamecube version of the game, we can expect a very nice multiplayer for four player with alot of fun. Maybe this game should have been made in the beginning of the DS, as it perfectly suits to the platform feature."

This is great, I hope it is one of the launch titles.

Bad news for LAN in Japan

I found this at Gamespot, "According to Kyodo News, the Ministry of Public Management, which governs the telecommunications field in Japan, is planning a new bill that will charge consumers a radio signal fee for operating devices that use wireless LAN. Previously radio signal fees were charged only to major companies with wireless communication licenses, such as broadcasting stations or moible phone operators. The ministry explains that the new bill aims to 'make things fair,' since wireles LAN products and moible phones use the radio wave in a similar manner.

The new radio bill specifically targets home and offices that operate PCs over a wireless LAN. However, if passed by the Japanese parliment, the law will mean that multiplayer on Sony PSP and Nintendo DS will come with a cost, since bothuse wireless LAN for their connections.

The bill will not be proposed to parliment until next year, so consumer and electronic manufactures in Japan will have plenty of timeto organize oppostionto the Ministry of Public Management."

I really hope this bill won't pass, but we have to wait and see.

DS Problems

I found this on Cubed-3:

Nintendo DS Problems...
...Not Enough Ideas to Justify the Cost?

N-Sider has pointed out that the President of Japanese outfit Muumuu games, Yukihito Morikawa, recently updated his online diary with some interesting comments about Nintendo's forthcoming portable, codenamed the 'Nintendo DS'.

In the diary he states that the rumoured cost of DS titles will be around the 3,800yen mark (~$35, £19) over in Japan, which will mean that developers will not be able to produce short titles due to the extreme costing. Games will, therefore, simply have to be on a grander scale in order to maintain peace amongst the ranks of Nintendo fans. Here is exactly what he had to say:

"I heard from a producer that a few DS projects going on in his company are deadlocked. There are a lot of new things that can be done [with the touch-sensitive screen], such as making hand drawn characters fight with each other or transforming a 3D object with the use of the stylus. You can bang [in the game] with the stylus, dig holes, chip away things... it's easy to come up with those kinds of small ideas, and the DS is a superb hardware in that sense."

"But, those kinds of ideas are too small to fit in a 3,800 yen cartridge, which is why [the developers] are deadlocked. It's difficult to expand on those types of small ideas, kind of like how a short story won't become a good novel if you bloat it up with unnecessary ideas. So the only way to fill a 3,800 yen cartridge is by stuffing in one huge idea or a lot of small ideas. But we can’t stuff in a bunch of small ideas, because that’s something which is already going to be done with Made in Wario [WarioWare, Inc. DS]."

Do you wanna see lots of DS games in action?

Well then you have come to the right place, thanks to Falco8 for this video of lots of DS games in action:

"I found this neat video on Gamecube Europe, there is low and high qualities here and I hope you all like them.

http://www.cube-europe.com/movies/NintendoDSgames.wmv (high quality)

http://www.cube-europe.com/movies/NintendoDSgames-low.wmv (low quality)"

Rumor: DS Games to be $35

I found this on Gamespot:

"DS games to retail for 3,800 yen?

Muumuu president Yukihito Morikawa hints that games for the Nintendo DS will retail in Japan for 3,800 yen.
TOKYO--In a recent online diary entry on his company's Web site, Muumuu president Yukihito Morikawa hinted that the retail price of Nintendo DS cartridges will be 3,800 yen ($35) in Japan. Since Muumuu is a third-party developer, the announcement is not an official release by Nintendo, and it is not known whether the price will be for all DS cartridges.

In his diary, Morikawa makes some critical statements about the price, saying that 3,800 yen per cartridge for the DS will be too expensive for some games and that it will limit the developers' freedom. Morikawa says that the DS’ hardware allows small but unique game ideas to be realized into a product at a low development cost. However, Morikawa continues, the developers won't be able to market those small games, because they can’t sell them at a lower price.

"I heard from a producer that a few DS projects going on in his company are deadlocked,” says Morikawa in his diary. “There are a lot of new things that can be done [with the touch-sensitive screen], such as making hand drawn characters fight with each other or transforming a 3D object with the use of the stylus. You can bang [in the game] with the stylus, dig holes, chip away things... it's easy to come up with those kinds of small ideas, and the DS is a superb hardware in that sense.”

"But, those kinds of ideas are too small to fit in a 3,800 yen cartridge, which is why [the developers] are deadlocked,” continues Morikawa. “It's difficult to expand on those types of small ideas, kind of like how a short story won't become a good novel if you bloat it up with unnecessary ideas. So the only way to fill a 3,800 yen cartridge is by stuffing in one huge idea or a lot of small ideas. But we can’t stuff in a bunch of small ideas, because that’s something which is already going to be done with Made in Wario [WarioWare, Inc. DS]."

Muumuu has developed a number of games for Sony Computer Entertainment, such as the Jumping Flash! series and Kuma Uta. The company is also currently developing an unannounced game for the Sony PSP, which Morikawa hints will feature a new gaming style."

DS Price and release date rumors (update)

I found this on gamespot:

"RUMOR #1: The Nintendo DS will be released on November 11 in the US at a price point of $179.99.

Source: Anonymous sources cited by games-press magpie Gamesindustry.biz.

The official story: "Nintendo does not comment on rumors or speculation."--Nintendo of America spokesperson.

What we heard: Though it originated in "unconfirmed reports from Japanese retail sources," the gamesindustry.biz story has a surprising amount of detail. It outlines a two-tiered DS launch: On November 4, the portable will launch in Japan for a retail price of 19,000 yen ($174.78). One week later, it will land on US shores on November 11 for a retail price of $179.95, $20 lower than the speculative $199 price online retailers are currently taking pre-orders at. So should we Yanks expect dual-screen action on Veteran's Day? "That plan is remarkably close to the truth," said one informed source, who also said the leak had prompted Nintendo to go on "information lockdown."

Bogus or not bogus?: Probably not bogus."

Old rumors

It is intersting to look at all the old rumors, Abner sent this to me:

"I found a lot of rumors about the DS on http://www.wired.com/news/games/0,2101,62064,00.html July 16, 2004

The theory: The DS won't feature a standard control-pad-and-button setup -- rather, it will incorporate motion-sensor controls that determine which direction the player is tilting the system.

The evidence: Nintendo first experimented with motion control with a 2001 Game Boy Color release called Kirby's Tilt 'n' Tumble, and later expanded on the concept with a prototype GameCube title called Roll-O-Rama, which was shown at the E3 show in 2002 but never released.

The odds: 3-1. Legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto always has put a high priority on new and interesting player interfaces, and motion control would be one of them. Perhaps the reason Roll-O-Rama didn't appear was that the technology was being reworked into the Nintendo DS. On the other hand, it's unclear what other types of games would benefit from this kind of control.

The theory: The DS will feature a built-in digital camera function.

The evidence: Like the motion controller, Nintendo showed off a seemingly complete camera attachment for the Game Boy Advance at E3 2002, but the attachment was never released. It worked with a GameCube prototype title -- also unreleased -- called Stage Debut, which mapped players' faces onto the in-game polygonal character models.

The odds: 4-to-1. Given the success of Sony's EyeToy, a Logitech-developed digital camera attachment for the PlayStation 2 home video-game system, it would seem that Nintendo would want to explore the possibilities of using a camera to control onscreen action. And if the DS could be connected to the Nintendo GameCube, that woThe theory: The DS will feature built-in wireless multiplayer gaming.

The evidence: Nintendo has wholeheartedly embraced the wireless revolution -- its WaveBird wireless controller is fast becoming the standard input device of choice for GameCube owners, and the company's latest Pokémon games -- releasing this month in Japan -- will include a Motorola-powered, 2.4-GHz adapter for wireless monster battles.

The odds: 2-to-1. Given Nintendo's recent penchant for all things wireless, expect a similar adapter to be available for the DS if it's not built into the design. But there's no indication yet that the Nintendo DS will feature multiplayer games.

The theory: The two screens won't be placed next to each other; they'll be layered on top of each other to create a 3-D effect.

The evidence: Electronics giant Sharp is a longtime Nintendo cohort and the manufacturer of the LCD screens on Nintendo's Game Boy Advance SP handheld video-game system. Sharp is developing 3-D display technology, and Nintendo is listed as a member of the consortium for said technology.

The odds: 100-to-1. "You can use the two screens as one big monitor.... The developer(s) will have the freedom to do what they want to do," said Nintendo spokeswoman Beth Llewellyn in a recent interview. Llewellyn went on to add that the screens would be aligned vertically, which rules out any possibility of the two screens acting in tandem to create a 3-D image.

Some theories are just too far out to be true, it seems -- unless that's just what Nintendo wants us to believe."

Paragon 5: "Trouballs" for the DS

I found this news at Nintendo Insider, "Handheld developer Paragon 5 has gone on the record to tell Nintendo Insider exclusively of its plan to bring 'Trouball', a title originally released on the Gameboy Color and of which a PC version is already in the works, to the DS.

Paragon 5 developed critically acclaimed titles Karnaaj Rally (Nintendo Insider rating: 8.6) and Micro Machines, as well as Hardcore Pinball, for Gameboy Advance, and the game Trouballs and Project S-11 for the Gameboy Color; Capcom originally published Trouballs for the Gameboy Color.

'Trouballs is a highly addictive puzzle game based on the simpliest game mechanic of rotation. This game is perfectly suited for the DS and we especially look forward to take advantage of the wireless multiplayer,' said Paul Bragiel, CEO of Paragon."

DS game cards details? (speculation)

I found this article on Gamecube Europe, "Matrix Semiconductor has begun shipping it`s memory chips in Japan. Using 3D layeryed transitor design denser memory at a cheap price can be produced. This is all well and good in general, but it could be big news for Nintendo fans.

Two years ago Nintendo invested $15 million on Matrix, seeing the potenial for the Gameboy Advance techonolgy. While Matrix`s Vice President Dan Steere refuses to announce the company they have shipped to, but he did state they would use it in a read-only nature.

While it is all speculation at the moment, it could mean that Nintendo plans to use these to store DS games for a cheap price. We will have to wait for an official word though."

No Third Party Sound and Music Engine for DS

I found this on Nintendo Insider:

"Nintendo Insider today revealed infomation that Nintendo is not allowing third-parties to create sound engines for the DS, stating that the DS`s ARM7 processor, which handles the Wi-Fi, touch screen, and audio. 'Has been excluded from direct access for commercial reasons.'

In order to create sound engines for the DS, the ARM7 processor would have to be taken apart in order to see what memory and function calls it uses. Without the ability to do this the developers will not be able to write their own music replayer, sound effect mixers, or even 'A decent music GUI for the musicians'.

According to Nintendo Insider, the majority of US and European developers are 'quite angry' and/or complaining about not being able to create sound engines for the DS. Developers are hoping that Nintendo`s stance will change.

'I have hopes they [Nintendo] will change it [their stance]... they say they our feedback into consideration,' said an anonymous developer.

"REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 15, 2004--Electronic Arts (Nasdaq:ERTS) today announced that The Urbz(TM): Sims in the City(TM), the latest franchise from the celebrated studio behind The Sims(TM), is in development for the Nintendo DS. Rumor: DS Pricing, launch date and software

I found this on Games Industry:

"Unconfirmed reports from Japanese retail sources suggest that Nintendo is planning to roll out the DS handheld on November 4th priced at 19,000 Yen (140 Euro), followed by a US launch on November 11th at $179.95 (145 Euro).

The same sources indicate that the Japanese launch of the handheld will be accompanied by five to six software titles, with Nintendo aiming to have 11 titles on the market by the end of 2004.

Nintendo reportedly aims to sell three million units of the Nintendo DS worldwide by the end of fiscal 2005 next March - a period which should encompass both the Japanese and US launches before Christmas, and the European launch in early 2005.

While these figures certainly seem plausible, it should be noted that Nintendo has issued no official confirmation of the launch date, price or software support for the Nintendo DS as yet; in fact, we're still not even sure what the DS will be called at retail, since Nintendo DS is still officially a codename, not a final product name.

The retail prices suggested in this report would almost certainly make the NDS significantly cheaper than the PlayStation Portable, which is expected to cost well over 30,000 Yen (220 Euro) when it arrives in Japan later this year, ahead of a US and European launch in 2005.

Earlier this week, a Nintendo spokesperson criticised the PSP in an interview with Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, arguing that the handheld could not be classified as a true video game system because of its integration of music and movie playback functions."

Sega Games (Rumor)

I found this on Gamecube Heaven, "In another story from GameCube Advanced, the site reports that not only Sega working on Sonic DS and Project Rub for the Nintendo DS, but also Super Monkey Balls DS, Puyo Puyo DS, and Phantasty Stars Online DS? details are scarce on most of the titles, but word has it that Phantasty Star Online DS will utilize the Nintendo DS` voice command features, as well as it`s wireless Wi-Fi networking system"

Sadly, this is just a rumor.

Dino Football (soccer) game for DS

I was on the internet when i found this DS sport news article from Eric Topf from Gamecube Advanced, "Dino, who has created many influential soccer titles such as 'Kickoff' and 'Player Manager', will be teaming up with veteran sports developer DC-Studio, responsibile for games like 'Salt Lake 2002' and 'NBA JAM 2002', and who recently developed the highly succesful GBA Video.

Dino hopes to create a game where gamers can tuly experence what being in a soccer game feels like for he believes that current soccer games offer sterile environment completed with pretty graphics.

there is no release date set nor a publisher, but is currently being planned for all major console and handhelds including the Nintendo DS."

-Falco8

Nintendo DS and the world wide web

I found this on Gamespot, "In a recent interview conducted by staff at Earthbound creator Shigesato Itoi` web site, Nintendo`s Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that it is technically possible for the DS to connect to the internet using its wireless LAN.... as long as a third party develops the appropriate software.

'We added the wireless Lan to the DS mainly for handhelds to communicate between each other', said Miyamoto. 'But if someone releases the appropiate software that allows it to connect to the internet'.

Miyamoto was quick to point out that Nintendo itself is not interested in developing the possible Internet capibilities of the DS. The company is focusing on the gameplay rather than hardware capibilities and plans to make the machine enjoyable without the need of additional devices or peripherials. 'The only thing we don`t want to do is add this and that and every connection and capability (to the US). We want to make the DS enjoyable, by itself, as far as we can"

Madden for Nintendo DS

Sorry for the lack of updates, I have been quite busy in the past few days.

I found this on SPonG News:

"According to an interview on GameSpot, Electronic Arts will be releasing a version of the ancient, though very much loved Madden series for Nintendo’s upcoming DS platform.

Although no specifics have been mentioned, speculation as to how the console will be employed to host the game is rife, with the ability to map out plays on the lower screen setting the Madden community off into a frothing brew of excitement.

The WiFi possibilities for Madden DS are also a keen point of interest, with current iterations of the series on home console constantly amongst the online favourites on any system.

Expect clarification within weeks."

I have actually never considered a Madden game for the DS but now that it is announced I am quite excited about it. Hopefully there will be some discussion about this in the comments section, if you would like to send a thought to me about this or any other news post, send me an email here and I may post it on the website.

Shin`en offers sounds to other Nintendo DS developer

I found this on Nintendo N-sider:

"Shin`en said it will offer its DSX sound engine services to other licensed Nintendo DS developers. Shin`en became the official licensed Nintendo DS developer back in April.

In the past, Shin`en also developed sound engine for the Gameboy called GHX sound engine and the Gameboy Advance called GAX sound engine. Shin`en is responsible for Gameboy Advance games as Iridion and Maya the Bee."

Visual Impact is now a licensed DS developer

I found this on Game Gossip:

"As the Nintendo DS release date (whenever that may be) approaches, it seems today the developer number for the system has now hit 102. Getting to the matter at hand, developer Visual Impact, behind the GBA versions of SSX3 and Corvette, updated its website not too long ago with word that it has become an officially licensed Nintendo DS developer. With word posted on the company being a licensed developer, Visual Impact put forth a Nintendo DS game page, one revealing that its first project for the handheld will be a 3D title of sorts. As usual, we’ll have more news on this mystery game as details make themselves available"

DS promotions

I found this on Cubed-3

"According to DMBulletin, NoE has appointed Geoff Howe Marketing Communications as the people to handle all future UK marketing campaigns."

"Geoff Howe and Nintendo have worked with each other in the past, but this arrangement looks set to give the company a much bigger role. Yesterday, Nintendo breifed the agency to come up with all sorts of promotions for hardware and software products. The two companies will also be working together to succesfully launch the DS next year."

image studio for DS?

I found this on Gamecube Heaven:

"Gamefront.de reports that Web Technology Corporation is working on a new version of iMageStudio for the Nintendo DS. By the looks of it, iMageStudio looks to be something similar to a Photoshop, or Paintshop program...Is this a program for Nintendo DS developers, or for consumers? For now I'm afraid that I can't answer those questions, but we're looking into it."

At this point I am a little bit skeptical on how real this news is.
