Very interesting article
Here is a very interesting article I found on Ferrago.com:
At a recent ELSPA Games shindig, Nintendo Europe head Dave Gosen admitted that a successor to the GBA is being planned, and that Nintendo's release plans for a new 'true' GameBoy handheld will rest with the successes or failings of the DS at launch. "New Game Boy iterations are under review right now, before the first DS is sold", the Big N chief is quoted as saying, also pointing out the experimental nature of the DS which will affect Nintendo's strategy greatly.
Strong DS sales could mean the next GameBoy is held back until 2007, conversely, if Nintendo feel it is losing ground to Sony, then a 2006 debut is more likely. Nintendo have already admitted that the unique and unusual nature of the DS may mean that it only endears itself to 10% of the handheld market, of course, if consumers approve of the system's various innovations, then Nintendo may have the luxury of holding back another handheld hardware embarkation.
In other news, the GBA SP Tribal edition launches in Europe today, sporting all kinds of 'ethnically' inspired tattoos, if you're interested. Not quite the 'innovation' we had in mind from Ninty, though...
