The Fall of the Playstation Generation

Much has changed since 1995 when one said 'gaming' and the word 'Nintendo immediately came to mind. Nintendo fell from the throne a year later in 1996 and has since been struggling to regain their former glory. But when Nintendo fell, a new gaming giant took their place at the head of the industry: Sony. Since the creation of the Playstation in the early 1990's, Sony has led the industry in third-party support, number of games, and market-share. Currently, Sony's Playstation 2 owns approximately 80% of the market. However, a new age of gaming now appears on the horizon and all three gaming giants (Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft) are poised to try to claim the majority of the market as their own. This new generation brings a new situation for each company and a turning of the tides may be at hand. Sony, the head of the gaming industry has made some crucial errors that may cost it its market-share and its success. However, in order to understand why this may occur, one must first examine the history of video-games before they understand the position that Sony has put themselves into.
The History of Gaming
Gaming has come a long way since it began with the Atari consoles back in the 80's. Atari made the first home consoles and they were a success. However, soon every brand from Pepsi to Quaker Oats tried to make games on their consoles and games were reduced in fun, challenge, and quality. As more and more companies tried to jump onto the Atari bandwagon, more and more fans of the consoles turned away from the industry. Soon, the entire gaming industry collapsed and the market died.
In 1985, a toy manufacturing company known as Nintendo that had also created the Game n Watch portable video games decided to try its hand at creating arcade titles. Much of their success in the arcade world was thanks to one man: A man known as Shigeru Miyamato. Shigeru created titles such as Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros for the arcade and it soon it became quite evident that the company had a knack for creating video games. They soon attempted to revive the home console industry with the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System (Also known as NES and Famicon). The NES brought innovative, simple, fun titles to the industry that people could play in the comfort of their homes. For its time, the graphics on the system were amazing and development was relatively easy. Key franchises that have kept the company going such as Super Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and F-Zero were born on this console. Nintendo's only competitor was Sega, a mid-sized company that also created home console games. Ultimately, however, Nintendo conquered.
In 1989, Nintendo released their new console, the Super Nintendo (also known as SNES and Super Famicon). The SNES improved upon everything that the NES did bringing about a new age of gaming. The console was capable of more realistic graphics, many more colors, faster processing speed, and even primitive 3D games. Sega's console, the Sega Genesis, could not keep up. Nintendo was at its golden age around here.
However, a new threat emerged: Sega was attempting to create an attatchment for their console that would allow it to use CD-ROMs for games in favor of traditional cartridges. CDs had several advantages and Nintendo knew it. Nintendo soon joined forces with electronics giant Sony to create an add-on for the SNES that would allow it to also use CDs. The device was to be named the 'Playstation'. However, the Sega-CD soon failed due to high prices for at the time, CDs were highly uneconomical and quite expensive. Nintendo canceled the the project with Sony who was left with some unfinished blueprints.
In the early 90's, Sony put the pieces together and released a powerful console similar to the SNES called the Playstation (PSX). Meanwhile, Nintendo released the Nintendo64 (N64), a powerful machine with a 64-bit processor and much more powerful 3D capabilities. Though the N64 was a machine far superior to the PSX in most technical aspects, the N64 was extremely hard to develop games for and Nintendo charged enormous royalty and licensing fees. Meanwhile, the PSX charged little and was similar in programming aspects to the SNES. Therefore, developers could easily develop high-quality games for a fraction of N64 costs without having to learn all new programming methods---They were already experienced programming on the SNES. Beginning with SquareSoft, the makers of the Final Fantasy series, 3rd-party companies jumped the boat and fled from Nintendo to Sony. Soon, Nintendo was left with virtually no 3rd-party support and most games that came out on the system were 1st- or 2nd-party games. Nevertheless, Nintendo created some fantastic games for the console such as Zelda: Ocarina of Time (still regarded by many as the greatest game ever made) and Mario 64. Ultimately, however, the people wanted a varied choice of games and Playstation, which now had the majority of the 3rd-party support, offered a far more extensive library of games than the N64. Finally, Nintendo lost their first console war.
It should be noted that the only way that Nintendo was able to pull through the generation was by falling back on the classic franchises created by Shigeru Miyamato. Thanks to these games, though, Nintendo pulled through and was able to continue the ongoing fight for control of the gaming industry.
A new age dawned as the industry grew and software giant Microsoft looked to get into the heated gaming market. However, Sega was still not out. After the failure of the Sega Saturn, which lasted until 1999, Sega was ready to put up one final fight. In 2000, the Dreamcast was released, an advanced console far superior to any other on the market in that day. The Dreamcast boomed for a time until in 2001, Sony released their next console: The Playstation 2. This powerhouse far outdid anything that the Dreamcast could pump out. However, the ultimate reason for Sega's demise was the DVD. Sega's main market had been in Japan, a country where DVD Players often cost over $500. When the Playstation 2 was released with the ability to read DVDs for a price of only $300, Japan scrambled for it. Whether they played games or not, people bought the console for just the DVD player. With everybody buying the PS2, Sega was soon drowned out to the point where there were no more orders from stores for the Dreamcast. They eventually faced the fact that they had to give up hardware development and became a third-party developer that now develops for all consoles.
Within a year, Nintendo and Microsoft released their own consoles: The Nintendo Gamecube (GCN) and the Microsoft Xbox. Both far outpowered the PS2 but Sony's amazing 3rd-party support from the previous generation carried over to the current one Some developers began to grow angry at Sony because the ease-of-development from the PSX did not carry over to the PS2. However, they generally accepted things and hoped that the PS3 would offer easier development. The Xbox faced several low-points mostly due to small things such as controller design and the size of the console. However, Microsoft ultimately got their act together and had some great titles on the Xbox such as Fable and the now legendary FPS, Halo. However, due to its size, the Xbox was rejected from the Japanese market. Nintendo, however, suffered a severe lack of 3rd-party support in an age when it was crucial. Many labeled the GCN as a 'kiddy console' due to its lack of violent 3rd-party games. Nintendo's lack of support furthered with poor decisions such as the use of a propriatary Mini-DVD format in favor of 12cm DVDs and its lack of online gaming support. Nintendo had officially gone from the dominant company to the 'kiddy' company. However, they weren't through yet...In fact they were far from it. Nintendo spent the GCN generation warming up to developers, gaining their trust back. They now have a much stronger bond with the 3rd-party developers than they did at the start of the GCN generation and this will likely carry over into the next generation when Nintendo intends to revolutionize the industry by releasing a console that they claim will take the market by storm and show the world something that will change gaming forever. A shroud of secrecy surrounds the Revolution but so far, everything that has been heard has been positive.
Once again, a new age is dawning and all three companies refuse to leave the industry. A new wave of consoles is rapidly approaching and the three companies are duking it out for hype and market-share. Sony seems to not be worried considering their enormous 80% market-share that they currently posess. Sony seeks to create a Media-Hub in favor of a gaming console this generation as does Microsoft. But Sony has made some crucial mistakes, some which they may fail to see. Could it be that Sony could fall from the gaming throne? Could the PS3 be Sony's last console? Could Sony fall at the hand of what their competitors fell to in the past? Perhaps. They have made many mistakes and now they will see the consequences.
Mistakes Beyond Repair and Lessons from the Past
Sony has made many mistakes, some less serious than others. One of the less serious errors in the PS3 is its design. While some may disagree, many think that the PS3's design is horrible and its controller's even worse. The machine is massive even when compared to the PS2 and the controller is awkward combining to form a console that strangely reminds me of the Xbox. Now, while the design of a console is a minor thing, it can alter the success of a console. Could Sony alienate itself from the Japanese market like Microsoft did with the Xbox? Will their sales fall for the same reason as Microsoft's did? Perhaps. The danger of creating such a large, bulky console increases when considering the alternatives: The Xbox360 and the Nintendo Revolution both offer smaller, sleeker consoles that many would prefer over the PS3. Regardless of whether or not this issue comes into play in the coming generation, the design of the system certainly will not help it.
Another issue that may hinder the console is the technology. Now, don't think that the PS3 is technologically inferior to the other consoles: It isn't. In fact, the situation is quite the opposite. The PS3 combines new Sony developed technology such as the Cell processor and the Blu-Ray disk that makes it technologically superior to the other systems. However, this may work against the system. The technology is not only very pricey and not developed exclusively for gaming, but both hardware components are in their infancy and are relatively untested. This will increase bugs and errors in games. Also, since the Cell was not developed for gaming but for general computing, it is very difficult to program for: A factor which Sony failed to consider. In addition, while the Blu-Ray disk offers up to 50GB of disk space, it is highly unlikely that any game will use that much room. The disk-format, therefore, is highly unnecessary and is merely there to introduce the format. This can be likened to the failure of the Sega-CD when Sega tried to use a format that was then highly uneconomical (The CD). Also, in using the Blu-Ray, Sony is taking a large gamble due to the format war that is ready to break out. Currently, Sony's Blu-Ray and Toshiba's HD-DVD (15-45 GB) are poised to fight to replace the DVD as the standard optical disk format. However even though it holds less memory, The HD-DVD is currently gaining more support largely due to issues such as price and ease of manufacturing. One is reminded of the format war between the VHS and Sony's BetaMax when Sony tried to create a powerful industry standard but was beaten out by a weaker format that was much cheaper to produce. Anyway, one final reason why these choices were foolish is because both technologies need to be newly manufactured...This will likely lead to a massive shortage of consoles during release.
The third reason why the PS3 will lead to the demise of Sony in the gaming industry is a major issue: Price. Despite what many companies like to think, people are not willing to spend $400 for a gaming console...And that is the low-end of what the system could potentially cost. The anticipated price for the PS3 ranges from $400-$800 making it the most expensive console since the Panasonic 3DO ($700). In addition, games for the PS3 are expected to range from $60-$80 in price. Controllers will likely cost around $30. So in order to buy a PS3, a game, and two controllers, you will need at least $490! The price is likely to be even more. Even Ken Kutaragi, Sony CEO said that 'you might want to get two jobs to pay for it'....And he's not kidding. The parts for the PS3 (Cell, Blu-Ray drive, etc) all cost a lot of money to manufacture. In fact, Sony is anticipating a total profit for the first year of -1 billion dollars! Oh, and don't bother waiting for the price to be lowered...It won't be. Kutaragi stated that the price will remain consistant throughout the PS3's life cycle. In addition, the system will be around $400 WITHOUT the hard-drive. That puppy will cost you another 150 smackers or so. Most of the world will agree that Sony's gargantuan prices are out of the common man's price range.
There is one final reason why the PS3 will fail and it is without a doubt the largest one. If you recall, the N64 failed due to its enormous development costs and the high skill-level needed to create a game for the system. You may also recall that SquareSoft, who has since merged with Enix to create Square-Enix, were the first to jump the boat and get onto the PSX bandwagon. Well apparently, Sony has not learned from the past and has made the same mistakes that Nintendo made back in 1996. The PS3 is a powerful machine, yes, but the power comes at a cost: The console is the most difficult to develop games for in history. In fact, EA predicts that to make a solid game for the PS3, it will likely take up to 500 people! Now obviously not every company will use this many staff members but than those companies may have longer development times. Sony has also grown arrogant and is now charging large fees for game development. They, like Nintendo once did, seem to think that it is a priviledge to develop for their console. It is this very attitude that lost Nintendo the market. Most developers do not like it when console-companies get overconfident and begin to build consoles at the expense of developers. When one looks at development for the PS3 as opposed to development for the Xbox360 or the Revolution (both of which are trying to greatly ease the development process), one must wonder if developers will stay with Sony or if they will leave for Microsoft and Nintendo. I personally think that Sony will be left with no developers. Once this happens, they will have no 3rd-parties left, meaning nearly no games...And unlike Nintendo, Sony does not have a strong 1st-party line-up: They will not be able to fall back on it like Nintendo did for the N64. One might say that such a thing won't occur, but it has already begun: Square-Enix is now reaching out to develop for all three consoles. They have also stated that they will likely stop developing for Sony after one or two more games. It is now only a matter of time before the developers leave Sony. Of course the PS3 will be well supported at launch. But eventually, developers will see that there is a greater profit to be made on the other consoles than on the PS3...And that is when Sony will be finished. Sure, after Sony profits from the success of the Cell chip and the Blu-Ray in other products, they will be in prime position to create a PS4. However, the market that they will have to sell to, that is the percent of the industry that will still be interested in Sony, will be too slim to make Sony any substantial profit. It could very well be that Sony will never make a PS4.
Conclusion
After reviewing the above information, one can conclude that Sony has witnessed first-hand what happens when a company makes crucial mistakes. They have seen what happens when a console is ahead of its time or when a system isn't developer-friendly. They have seen what occurs when a console is so bulky that it won't appeal to a mass audience. However, Sony has not taken notice of these factors. They have jumped headfirst into a combination of all of the mistakes of the past. They have become arrogant and short-sighted. The solid reign that Sony now has on the industry is about to collapse just as it did to Nintendo back in 1996. Sony has not learned from the mistakes of the past and now they will pay the price. The Playstation Generation has met its end... And if Sony wants to keep any amount of market-share at all, they will have to act fast and change their strategy. Unfortunately, it may already be too late in the game.

Whoa. Excellent aricle, Ninty. It really makes you think...It's like Sony decided to put all of their mistakes into one! Also, remember the failure that was the recent PSX? It failed because it was way too expensive and wasn't rallly a gaming machince. Here comes the PS3 media hub...eek. :) Great article.
Jimmie (Patrick)
wow, that was great
I just polsted a link to this article on Nintendo forums. :) It's worth it to get it out to those with little faith in the big N. :)

Fanboy!
Red sucks! Blue rules!
Nice article. :) I do see Sony making a PS4, thought. But it might not gain anyone back...
It seemed just a little biased if you ask me but it did bring up some good points. I think the PS3 will still sell well based off of name alone but I don't it will dominate as much of the market as the PS2 did. I don't know about you, but I think this next generation isn't looking so well for Nintendo. In a recent interview with Sega, it was revealed that they don't even know what the Revolution is let alone have any development kits.
At the rate we're going, I believe the Revolution will launch just like the DS. It will have very few worthwhile titles at launch and it would probably take a year or so for the good games to start coming out.
I have faith in Nintendo for making a good console but they already seem to have made a few mistakes (no HDTV support, 512 MB harddrive, etc.), which is not good when nobody even knows what the console is yet.
If Sony does lose massive market share when the consumer decidedes that the PS3 is too much, I really want to see Nintendo and Microsoft take advantage and try to keep Sony in it's state. Never to get too cocky the following gen like Sony has. Nintendo and MS should pummel Sony down, giving it no chance. They have to think smart next generation and the following.
I can't wait for the playstation to end :). It will be the greatest day in gaming history :)
Exellant article.. It seems to be all true and to the worry bugs that think about graphics, Satoru mentioned "When you turn it on and see the graphics, you will say Wow!" as well Satoru or Shigeru said this to EGM "Revolution won't be inferior to Playstation 3 or Xbox 360"-That is not the exact quote but close.
This is way too biased.
Can't really take away from you your opinion, but reading this i had a feeling that your some kid.
All of your statements (every one of them) were slaughtered during PLAYSTATION Conference.
PS3 will have the best devs support (right now PS3 exclusive games number exceeds X360 exclusive games number, it's 26 to 22 for SONY). Game producing will be cheap and easy as never before, because SONY bought many licences for using stuff like NovodeX, Havok and UE3.0 engine in games, every developer with a dev-kit will be able to make great game. The funniest thing is, that Nintendo lost their greatest 2-nd party developer this gen to, you know what i'm talking about? Factor 5, and they will deliver 1st class game called Lair on PS3 launch.
So, just keep your facts straight, PS3 will own X360 and Revo because it's the most powerful one, because it will have the greatest ammount of games, because it will have the newest tech in it, and because the biggest user base.
Oh, almost forgot about your "format-wars" speech: Betamax lost to VHS because of porn, kids don't know that, but SONY didn't want for porn to land on their format. And coming to our times: blueray is actually as cheap to make as HD-DVD, and it gots better support from PC market, electronics market, and movie market. So sorry, you lost, quit being a kiddy fanboy.
...... FanBoy !!!!!!!.......
Nice article here, I enjoy it. BUT to much BLIND faith in Nintendo and BIASE towarrds Sony. Sony will AGAIN rule the next generation so please take yoshi out of your ass pipe and just admit it.
As A gamer who loves ALL games, especially Nintnedo, I can say this article seemes very biased and fanboy like. But it is still good.
PS3 and PSP will both dominate, in time, thats LIFE FANBOYS. NOW GET OVER IT AND ENJOY WHATS LEFT OF NINTENDOS CONSOLE YEARS!!!!
I know I will.
Well, the above post is from an obvious sony fanboy, a pot calling a kettle black.
Sony has yet to produce a working game running on a working console, only videos of their games running on TV's (an E3 complaint by many game magizines). So this awesome power people make the cell processor to be, has yet to be proven against the rest. By May of 2006, we can all see what's going down with all the consoles.
BTW, Blue-Ray discs may have come down in production cost, but they still cost more than HD-DVD, because HD-DVD can be produced on standard DVD presses. And HD-DVD uses Red laser technology, which is so cheap you can get a red laser for free in a cereal box. Blue lasers are much more expensive, bringing up console price. Although not as much so as the awesome green laser. But thats another topic.
Lastly, here is a blurb from game informer #148 "the PS3 dev kits only utilize a 1X Blu-Ray drive, which runs at 6.75 MB/Sec, versus 360's use of 12x DVD (at 16.65 MB/Sec). Thus, if the PS3 sticks with the 1x Blu-Ray drive, although it'll have more capacity and a DVD, the 360 would acess the info on it's disc faster."
mmmm, loading times =C )
My god, that article was mediocre. I get the feeling that you learned most of that by watching G4. The Dreamcast is near identical in power to the PS2; so close, in fact, that some consider it more powerful. What the hell is a "Famicon"? Whatever it is, I was unaware that it was the first console to sport those 3D Mode-7 graphics in F-Zero, right? Sony's not giving up without a fight. Hopefully Nintendo will play their cards right, but they haven't done that in years. Here's to you being right.
hello, to the poster a few posts above me, the xbox360 has more exclusives & titles slated for release than the PS3, even after the PS conference. Go look it up. the article is in no way biased. it is an analysis based on past facts that have occurred in previous gaming generations. its context may be a little outdated though, as what happened back then may not apply to the next generation.sony may win this, so may microsoft & nintendo, its still too early to tell. so kindly refrain from the --insert console-- will own --insert consoles-- sentences until all 3 consoles have been released.
IMO, i dont quite like the idea of the blu-ray in the PS3. like the previous post have said, drive read speeds. also, the data layer can be easily damaged because of the thin 'protective' layer thus some kind of protection is needed to coat the disc which will cost more. the advantage of blu-ray is that the PS3 may not need a hard drive at all because of the capacity of blu-ray disc. but then again, with reading speeds so slow;like all new formats when released, the advantage is very well lost.
I really hate it when fanboys write long articles about a console they hate. I can't believe I wasted my time reading this poorly written piece of laughable paperwork. It's so biased (especially the "mistakes" part).
I'm not being a fanboy or anything but I agree with PSfan's comments. Well said.
Noone actually contrargumented me.
There's too much fake info in this article.
PS3 will be easy and cheap to develop for, so even the newcomers of game market will be able to make great games.
Blue ray has more support than HD-DVD and is actually cheaper to make, the problem with produce lines have been already fixed, so blue-rays can be made in older facilities, with some small modifications.
SONY already showed playable game (Gundam) and i t looks as good as E3 demo, so another point goes down.
X360 has nothing new in it, the only thing that M$ can achieve with it is short life-cycle.
There's hope in Revolution, because it can show something really new, but if it won't SONY will win again, and actually even if nintendo will show something great and new, PS3 will still win, because of developers support.
Oh, and PS3 for today has 30 exclusives announced, X360 has 27 (counting 2 bioware projects).
What the hell is a "Famicon"?
Famicon=NES
:)
HA HA HA HA HA HA
So funny to see the FANBOYS sucking each other off while fantising about yoshis toung in thier ass pipes! Your blindness makes me laugh.
Come on! This was a GOOD article andwell written. BUT so fanboy biased it made me laugh HA HA HA
I am a GAMER! I LOVE good games and systems. I am NOT BLIND, take a look around and see what your missing. Nintnedo is not the only good game company.
PS3 and PSP are NOT going to die they will be very sucessfull. Who CARES? JUST ADMIT IT and welcome to the REAL WORLD fan boys!
NOW I COMMAND all fanboys to stop dry humping your inflatable Kirby toys and FLAME ME FOR 10 POSTS!!!!
I quit reading when you talked about the whole sega genisis not beating the snes. WRONG! In the end genesis did win. Plus half that info doesn't even help your theory on sony dying. If you ask me this is bologna. FANBOY!
By the way Graalcloud was right, you probably did see the icons episode on G4 and just slapped it together here.
I loved the article. Journalistic integrity, harshness in some parts, facts, elaborating on each topic. Great, this is one of the best articles I have ever read. You obviously have done your homework. I own all three consoles, have been a gamer all my life, and this points out great arguments and puts them into a context we all can understand. I am a hardcore gamer, but a hardcore Ninendo fan first. I was trying to find some trace of flaming or ranting in here, but alas, it is not to be found. Amazing article.
Ninty Freak, instead of taking you to task in your comments section, I've decided to take you on publicly for all to see. It's idiots like you who spread asshat rumours like "Xbox 360 the Dreamcast 2", "Nintendo the third party in one year!", and now "Playstation is dead!". Just shut the fuck up and leave the internet, you're just too fuckin stupid.
You'd do well to read the whole thing. I'd like for you not just realize you're wrong, I'd like you to know what is in fact the truth, since you did just make up everything you wrote. I think while it's not related to your claim of "Playstation 3 will kill Sony", but the power difference between the N64 and PSX is not s great as you say it is. There is a lot of false info you r "history" preface, but this is the worst. In reality, the Playstation was able to dish out twice the number of polygons as the N64, but the N64's superior texturing abilities brought the competition to a very tight tie. Again, research on your part would have helped greatly. You should write a formal apology to your reader for lying to them, especially to such an extreme degree with this post.
Ciao.
HAHAHAHAHA
It is the battle of the fan boys, right here on DS update!!!
Who will win? Nintendo fan boys VS Sony fan boys VS x-box fans.
And ME? Just in the middle laughing my ass off!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can not wait to see all the homos here go at each other!!
Flame away fan boys!!!!!!!
This post has been removed by a blog administrator.
Yeah! XSV fucking rolled Dynasty!
Matty Marshall owns!!!!1!!111!!
Let me say a couple of things that may prove Ninty's article as completely wrong.
First, Xbox was scorned in Japan not only by size but rather because of Japan's known nationalism for not taking foreign technology. PS2 is from Sony (Japan) so its logical that they will support it.
Second, price. I can say that roughly 1/5 of this article can be taken out because of it. I hope this article comes as a rant because it obviously fails if it tries to state facts. Reason? Sony has not yet released the official price for the PS3, even less for the games. Ninty should've noticed that the increase in price is not Sony's fault but rather by the cost of creating a modern videogame as a whole (it will take roughly double the personnel it took this current gen to create a next-gen videogame; that plus more capital).
Third, last and the most important thing that Ninty seems to forget. It is Sony's Playstation brand. That alone creates immesurable amounts of hype that Nintendo can no longer top. Let's be real ladies and gentleman; the fact that Sony is releasing the PLAYSTATION 3 will make the videogame industry and audience go crazy over it. Mark my words, the PS3 launch will be like PS2's. That means, the inital shipment will be sold out in a day, if not a couple of hours.
If anything a company messes its own next gen projection by how it currently performs. Sony has won over 80 million gamers this gen. Most of them will carry over the next gen. Nintendo has continously lost a portion of its fanbase with every generation. The Gamecube has been nothing but a dissapointment. Lots of games cancelled, drought of good games, exclusives that failed to achieve their creator's goals, valuable assets being sold to the competition.
Nintendo has done a lot of terrible mistakes this gen. What do you expect developers to do with Nintendo next gen, especially with their latest announcements of not competing directly against Sony and a perplexingly strange controller that further alienates third party developers?
Yes. Nintendo has more chances of failing the next generation and getting out of the console industry than Sony. buy isotretinoin
"but SONY didn't want for porn to land on their format"
Just like UMD's right? >_>
I see our mystery writer has nothing to say, and I'll take his silence as shame, unless he speaks up and explains this pile crap.
Im almost to tears. Possibly the most beautiful piece of literature ive ever read. The pieces match. Maybe what Sony thinks will bring it to unbeatable will actually take it out of the game.
Except that everything written is completely false in that article. Were you not paying attention?
For the PS Fan Boys, Name one part thats fake? Also tell me ONE place that he/she said Nintendo would win over the PS? He/she said Xbox and Nintendo will be the last standing, not saying directly that Nintendo will dominate solo.
Also Either Sony leaves gaming after PS3/4 or when better tech will and actual profit on the product itself comes out they will abandon all u PS fans. They are hardly making a profit on their systems. All it is, is licenses. Their profit margin is so low i can believe they are willing to continue. If what is in this post is true and really happens then Sony would be idiots to continue.
10 years and no price drop? So lets compare. Xbox 360 graphics 5 years after launch, Id say around 150-200. Revolution 5 years... 100-150. PS3 in 5 years 400+. Ok not only the prices but what is the life cycle of game systems currently? 5yrs or so? So if Nintendo and Xbox stick to this then wont they each be able to release their next gen console AND the gen after next console? Now correct me if im wrong but wernt we in the 800mhz processors. Now its what? 3.2ghz? So 5 years in the future when the Ps3 is half way through its life cycle I estamate it to be around 6ghz? Then wouldnt that give Nintendo and Xbox plent of power to slaughter PS3 while Sony is still trying to milk the same cow?
Im sorry to say this but Xbox will probablly take sonys place in #1 (Nintendo i dont think will but a man can hope) Sony... There will be some loyal fans and they may make a site such as this one years from now saying "The Fall of Nintendo" or "The Xbox's End" but we all know that currently Sony made some major mistakes that they may or may not know, but if not fixed (which is a little late) will distroy it.
Did you notice that the people that called him a fanboy that actually had a name had PS in thier name, and that 1st guy that called him a fanboy name was PSfan (yeah...FAN!). Kinda ironic isn't it?
If the PS3 failed I don't see XBOX 360 taking 1st, cause everyone in Japan that had a PS3 would switch to Nintendo, because the XBOX is American, and the XBOX Live service is expensive, and why play online when you have to pay, when you can play online for free on another system?
Im not saying I like Xbox 360 taking 1st but their online play is very well developed. Nintendo hasnt specified on theirs so i cant really compare. So this isnt 100% what i believe but Xbox is the middle man. So if the #1 falls then doesnt it make sence that #2 would take 1st, atleast for a little bit. Xbox has its cool factor, something Nintendo is definitly working on with its design. But the fact that Nintendo is so secretive and the new controllers will either make or break the system gives people hesitation to support it. When they see the full thing on display (which might be monthes after the Xbox 360 release) then people will support or ignore it. So currently Xbox has its edge, but has a high chance of losing it.
Um just looking at the date for the article I think it might be off. 2002? Thats a while ago, before we knew anything about any of the 3 (except for the cell processor) Probablly just a typo or something but still might wannna be fixed :P
Beiness, look further up. I linked to a full rebuttal with valid proof and information sources that proves every point wrong. You'd do good to take note.
Great article, i found it quite interesting, and i think that Sony would make a falldown with the PS3. I think that Sony is doing this to Hardcore gamers, while casual gamers dont know about the PS3, i think that casual gamers know a lot about the 360 because of the revealing of the 360 in MTV. I know that Nintendo and Microsoft would make a good job while Sony will have a hard time making PS3's and losing a lot of money, and yes, IT WILL be history when Sony ends the Videogaming market
Note: to all Sony fanboys, i dont care what u say, this is an unbiased opinion, it is a fact
OK if the PS3 is the last of the Play Stations there will only be Nintendo and Microsoft. Does
anyone know if any developers will take Sonies plaice???
hey stupid
get the sega facts right!
DC was released on 9/9/99 in the us and in 98 in Japan!
also the cd was not uneconomical the drive was slow!
it was a 1x drive so long loading!
"In 2000, the Dreamcast was released, an advanced console far superior to any other on the market in that day."
It was released in 1999, you dolt.
"The Dreamcast boomed for a time until in 2001, Sony released their next console: The Playstation 2.
You idiot. PS2 was released on March 4, 2000 in Japan, and October 26, 2000 in the U.S.
"This powerhouse far outdid anything that the Dreamcast could pump out."
Nope. As mentioned in previous posts, DC was nearly as powerful as PS2 in many respects.
"However, the ultimate reason for Sega's demise was the DVD. Sega's main market had been in Japan, a country where DVD Players often cost over $500. "
Again, you're just making stuff up. $500? What the heck? Don't be stupid.
Other mistakes on the comment section:
"famicon = NES"
No, the Famicom, short for "Family Computer" was the NES. FamicoM. Note the "M".
"In the end genesis did win."
No, moron, the SNES won in the end. Check your figures.
"Xbox was scorned in Japan not only by size but rather because of Japan's known nationalism for not taking foreign technology."
Pal, I LIVED in Japan for four months. Apple Computer, an American company, has a larger marketshare in Japan than it does in the U.S. Xbox failed, in part, because of Square Enix passing over the Xbox in favor of making games for Playstation 2.
"Their [sony's] profit margin is so low i can believe they are willing to continue. "
WRONG. Sony's games division, led by Playstation, accounts for over HALF of Sony's revenues. Playstation is now the driving force keeping Sony alive. Why do you think PS3 and PSP both incorporate Sony's proprietary storage media? Because that's Sony's best chance at getting the public to adopt them (PSP cartridges and Blu Ray), which will convince movie studios to release videos on them, computer makers to create Blu Ray readers, etc.
There is one thing that will always insure the survival of the nintendo name-
Rabid Fanboys (like myself) who will always denounce the competitor.
Sony has none of these. All of the ps defenders (psfan, playstation quality controller, etc.) would never admit to being a fanboy, but us on the N-ship are proud to say so.
Its like the boston red sox. Those guys didn't win the series for like 115 years. But they still had fans rooting for them the entire way.
And when they finally won, the fans got the fucking time of their lives.
You console gamers are such ass-clowns.
You allways make the hardware aspect into such a debacle. 90% of you dont understand any form of hardware a setup in computers(yes, consoles are technically considered computers).
Allmost all of you dont technically understand what your saying. Metaphoricly, you all need to sit down & shut up. Console gaming is all about the games. Not the hardware. If your looking for state of the art graphics, than your in the wrong area of gaming.
Get a PC.
Anyway, not a bad article. But, what you said is more or less half-truths. Your cumulative opinion based on the facts.
I Agree that Sony will most likely lose majority share, but, as much as I'd like to see them bite the dust, they wont. At least not immediately.
Reserve your judgement on all systems, as far as hardware goes, until there all on the market.
What I'm really saying is dont get so fucking involved. Dont beleive the hype. Just enjoy the ride.
I know this won't be read, but whatever. Whichever hapless fool crosses upon this, ready to post their reply smacking down this article, just let them say what they say. If the writer of this article reads this, just let people like their console. We don't make fun of Nintendo for having practically nothing on the Next Generation table for E3.
I'll admit, I'm a bit of a Playstation fanboy, but I love some Nintendo games(Super Smash Brothers, earlier Marios, post-N64 Zeldas), but Nintendo tries to be too revolutionary on the next title. They try to radically change the gameplay of said game(For example, Mario Sunshine).
But whatever, like what you like.
Sigh, some people just never learn.
very good article despite a few mistakes, some already mentioned in above posts, but 1 atari didnt start the home consoles there were others before them like coleco-vision, and f-zero was never on the NES it was on SNES, and to ever said if you want cutting edge graphics get a PC that is partially wrong, in the beginning of a generations life cycle consoles have better cutting edge graphics than any PC but later in a generations life cycle the PC gains better graphic capabilities than a console due to new technology since PC's advance more frequently than a consoles average of every 5 years.
Its a nice article, but a lot of it sounds very hard to believe. I have never heard anything about EA saying that a PS3 game would take 500 people to make. PS3 games will need more programers, but I doubt it would need that many people working on a game.
THe PS3 will be expensive, despite what all the fanboys saying that it hasn't been announced yet. Ken Kutaragi said that he wants people to encourage themselves to work longer hours in order in order to buy one. It will probably cost $400-$450. The HDD is also going to be 80gb and 120gb, which will be expensive.
I think the 360 will be the most popular, despite the PS2's success (casuals have don't have loyality to any company, so you can't say it will win because of its fanbase), because they have addressed many of the complaints made about the XBOX, like its size and lack of games made for the Japanese market. Thats just what I think and I'm not sure that it is going to happen. I'm just going to wait until their all released until people can tell which console is going to be more popular.
I would also like to say something about the comments made by all the fanboys. The consoles look is important to many people. A lot of Japanese didn't buy the XBOX because they thought it was too big. Most people also thought the PS2 had the best design of this generation. Its not a great thing that people judge a console for its look, but a lot of people do. I also think its funny that people are calling everyone else fanboys and then saying "PS3 and PSP will dominate". Doesn't that make you a much bigger fanboy.
I'm not going to say anything about the ease of development. I haven't worked on an XBOX 360 or a PS3 and I doubt anyone here has. Maybe the PS3's licensed middleware or the 360's XNA will give one of them the advantage, but the only way we could know is if we heard from developers who had worked on both consoles, and we probably won't be able to hear about that until they've been released. Anandtech had an article about developers who worked on both of them and they said the 360 was easier to develope for but Xenon was less powerful then a PC processor. They didn't mention if the developers used XNA or the PS3's middleware so its probably outdated. It was also removed to protect the sources, or, as some people think, because they made a false claim that Pentium and Athlon processors would be more powerful then Xenon and the Cell.
It was a pretty good read here, but people have said there were some false facts.
I am a nintendo fanboy.
Why?
I like Nintendo games, and the players who play PS, are usually scum jocks or such. Can't control themselves in their mouths either I guess.
While opinions can be debated, this article is full of factual errors and simply wasn't researched well.
1. Atari didn't create the first video game consoles. Magnavox did. In 1972.
2. Nintendo was making arcade games as early as 1980, and the Famicom was released in 1983.
3. The Sega CD did not fail because of the cost of the media. CDs have always been cheaper to produce than ROM cartridges. It failed because the hardware was too expensive and there was a lack of quality software.
4. It's a bit of a stretch to say that the N64 was technically "far superior" to the PSX. They both had their strengths.
5. Again, the PSX's CD format is much cheaper to produce than the N64's solid-state cartridges. This, coupled with Sony's aggresive pursuit of third parties and the cheaper licensing fees that you mentioned contributed to Sony's success.
6. The Dreamcast was released in 1998 [Japan] and 1999 [USA]. It is, technically speaking, very comparable to the PS2. The PS2 suffers from a serious lack of video memory, and it's notoriously difficult to implement anti-aliasing on the system. The Dreamcast's video subsystem is a much more efficient design.
7. I seriously doubt the size of the Xbox is the main deterrent to Japanese gamers. If size were such an issue, the Dreamcast and the Gamecube would have wiped the floor with the PS2.
8. Sure, the Cell was developed for general processing. So were the PowerPC chips going into the Xbox 360. Among the current generation, it's only the least powerful PS2 that's using an exotic, proprietary CPU--MS and Nintendo are using tweaked desktop chips.
9. The PSX and PS2 both cost around $350 at launch, and they still sold quite well.
dude, you're sacrificing facts for blind fanboyism.
it is still going to be insanely hard to program on. Programming threaded applications is extremely time-consuming and difficult. It is hard to balance the load among the threads to have maximum efficiency. I estimate that by the end of its life, the PS3 will only have reached about 75% efficiency.

Good Job!!It brought up many good points, but still hard to believe that it will fail. Although I hate sony with a vengence, it just seems like Sony is playing all of their cards right! I sure hope they fail though! Ninty deserves the throne back! Thanks for taking the time to write this!
so yeah the article is a little far fetched, and im a huge nintendo fan, but own a ps2 and gamecube. i bought the ps2 for its free online so i could play sports games for free. most of my friends bought a ps2 for free online sports games as well. some of them bought a gamecube so they could get madden and a system to play it on for $150. i think the ps3 fan base will be just as big, but they will lose a few customers to the price range. im not saying sony will die....sony has enough money to make consoles and lose on profit for the next 30 years just on sales of the ps2 and software alone. they arent going anywhere, but they will probably lose some gamers this time around because they are taking a gamble on the fact that people are willing to pay $300-400 for a console and $60 for games. i know the price hasnt been announced but most analysts say $300-350 which is a little steep in my opinion. i cant remember what the ps2 sold for...im thinking $299 and it sold great, so who knows. i wont buy a ps3 until it goes under $200 but thats just me. ps3 will sell out on its first day just on hype alone...whoever said that before me was right. the revo will do better than the gamecube but it will have a tough road ahead of it. releasing smash brothers online is a good start, but they need sports games. you see all the football players and basketball players playing their games on ps2's...thats free publicity. nintendo needs to get on that as well.
My name is the first thing i had on my mind, writing this post.
If you're calling me a fanboy, look at the things that you write.
My post, as well as Adam one had facts in them, so i can't see you people bashing it, it just doesn't make sense.
Another thing i noticed: general computing is what processor should do, yopu think that games are something more than numbers? It's just a code, so now what's important is how much power does the processor have.
I brought down your theory about developing, SONY delivered middleware which lets new developers make great games. Another fact is that Bandai, the developer that makes Gundam next-generation title, didn't show Gundam trailer (the X360 one) to the Summer X360 summit in Tokyo. President of Bandai, said, that they didn't want to do this, because game looks inferior to the PS3 one. I mean, come on, PS3 is like 9 months ahead, and we got playable game which looks better, then X360 trailer.
Basically, this article is really pile of lies and wrong statements, made by fanboys for fanboys, who thinks that PS3 will be worse than everything, because SONY used next-generation stuff in it.
BTW: can you show me some Revolution games? No. Were there X360 game trailers in December? Hell no! So this thing already shows, that PS3 is better than everything else.
Sony sucks, everything you said what completely true...
Sony will die next gen, everyone who disagreed with you is an idiot fanboy.
You provide an interesting read, but I would hardly call it accurate. More than anything, this article is speculation, with little information to go on.
Your use of the past as an indication of the future is a nice idea, but you seem to have only picked out a subjective history, one that assists your theory. It seems to me that you decided you would write a paper on why Playstation would die, and then starting looking for historical support.
A better commentary would have looked into why Playstation would remain as well. Sony has a lot going for it, as many others have posted, and it seems very doubtful that either Nintendo or Microsoft will steal their market share anytime soon.
Don't think that I hate Nintendo either. In fact the only current generation system I own is a Gamecube. I haven't owned a PS or PS2 but have played them a lot. I would not say they are better than Nintendo's respective products, but most people seem to think so. Nintendo is not taken seriously anymore, and although I love the games and will continue to stick with them, I really think that their future is far more unsure than Sony's.
Good debate here.
But of course the Nintendo biases "fan boys" are talking shit out thier mouths and just making things up out of the airs. Makes them looks like fucking retards ha! ha!
Then again, the PS fanboys are OVER confident and trying to be all smart. Which makes them look like nerds ! HA! HA!
As a gamer i dont give a shit, either way I win with my DS, PSP, Ps3 and revolution.
I hope the homo fanboys on BOTH sides can take thier dicks out of thier own ass pipes and appreciate ALL GAME SYSTEMS!
No I command all fan boys to flame away!!!!!!!!
hahahahahahahahahah
ok you want facts, Sony does not make sturdy hardware, they make products so that they brake easy so that consumers are forced to buy another, and advertise propducts that help assist in the system to stop working like the verticle stand for the ps2 which caused many ps2's to stop working properly, second sony may have the most games yes but they also have the highest percentage of really shitty games, so there are some facts for ya, yes the ps2 was more succesful yes there are some very good games for it, but the above info is also true.
I don't suppose you have a link then?
are you serious adam, like youve never read this your self look it up its all over the place, it is a known fact that standing a ps2 verticly damages the disc drive over time, look it up yourslef its no hidden secret, and if youve never heard or read this then youve been living under a rock.
OH I've heard of Playstation 2's going kaput, but I've also read the same number of testimonies in regards to the Gamecube. Gamecubes especially with the tray lid release mechanism becomes stuck and the lid would no longer close. If you'll recall, the Xbox itself become a fire hazard and was considered a high risk device to use. Microsoft had to recall all power cables. We're talking millions of cables. All consoles have a significant number of faults and factory defects. The reason the Playstation gets so much attention is because when you're dealing with a user base 5 times greater than any single company, there are bound to be a few more issues. It's a trend, as consistent as gravity.
heres a referance to this i found real quick if you look youll find much more i'm sure http://gamepro.com/hub/head2head/games/letters/16525.shtml
its down the page a bit near the bottom
ive never met anyone with a defect in there gamecube and i know many people who own one, mine gamecube has been through hell and back, its been dropped kicked fell down a few stairs and it still works perfect, my xbox on the other hand was not very tolerant of any abuse, but ive known atleast 12 plus people that have had there ps2 shit the bed
Just because you've never met them does not mean they don't exist. If you're going to use your personal life as some sort of "source", then I might as well do it too. I have two friends who own Gamecubes and both have had faulty tray lids. I know about 10 people with Xboxes, and all of them had to get new power cables. I know around 15 people with Ps2's, and not one of them has ever had a problem with their Ps2s. I guess I can start creating facts on this basic conjecture, right? Wrong.
Again, when your userbase is 5 or more times as large as the other guys, you're more than likely to have 5 times the number of defects. It's basic and clearly faulty math, but its the underlying point. More units means more defects. The problem with Ps2's is certainly not as widespread as most anti-Sony fanboys want you to believe.
Ok, i have no idea why I'm posting here, since everyone seems to simply ignore what the others are saying, but oh well...
Before I start talking (doh, already did), I'm a Nintendo fan, just because I hate Microsoft because they made sure everyone uses windows, which is the worst operating system in existence, and Sony makes sure all their games are easy to copy (ever noticed they have no 1st party games?). I kinda liked Sega, but since they started developing for everything, that doesn't really matter anymore.
I just wanted to say, why should there be a new format? Face it, the DVD can contain enough information for anything, heck, a basic 3D game could be crammed in 50MB, why should anyone need more then 8 gigs?
Also, the power of a console doesn't really matter anymore, quit screaming about it. All the consoles are now so powerfull, it's almost impossible to create a game to use all that power! What are they going to do, have 2000 enemies at once in the screen? No way.
The whole thing about games at the moment, is just buying 3th party support and making sure you support any feature the developers want to use.
And what I think, is microsoft is doing the first, and nintendo the second. Sony's just been pissing off all kinds of people lately, and I don't mean the console(s) they made, but mostly all the other hardware they produce, with the so called "new media". I haven't seen anything from them that wasn't hell to use...
But that's just my 2 cents.
Oh, one more thing about the last few posts here, a friend of mine lives in a house with 7 small children, and his gamecube as been smeared on with peanut butter, thrown of tables, and thrown of a circling staircase a couple of times. The staircase was damaged, the cube wasn't. From my personal experience, too, all nintendo products have been what I like to call "child-proof" (meaning they can withstand a lot of physical stress).
I completely ignored the rest of your post after you said Sony has no first party games. God of War being the most recent, as well as the entire Twisted Metal series, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, ICO, Sly Cooper, Shadow of the Collossus, and the list goes on. Perhaps removing the BS from your post would allow me to read it through.
first off there is never going to be a time when everyone agrees what console or company is best, but heres one thing i think every one can agree on the ps3 is the ugliest console controller ive ever seen in my life even worse than the original huge xbox controller which was really bad
One thing your right mister Nintendo fanboy.
Everyone ignores what other people wrote, and it's idiocy.
PS2 has got a lot of first party games, probably something around the half of all GC games.
SONY isn't making any mistakes, they are showing that they are the best.
There's already over 30 exclusive titles announced for PS3, and it's 8 months till launch. X360 didn't have almost any announced games 4 months ago.
Revolution don't have any game footage presented.
So it will be all over PSX again.
Much power, best future and best support.
Heh. This totally proves that Sony won't learn from Nintendo's mistake. Hey Sony, can you pronounce, "D-o-w-n-f-a-l-l?
P.S. The Game Cube isn't kiddy. Nintendo just doesn't believe blood, gore, violence, nudidity, ect, makes a good game.
gc is kiddy look at all that mario and kids games.
I can't believe these SONY fanboys REALLY!! PS3 will fail and I am willing to bet my entire life on it!
REV>Xbox360>PS3
or
Xbox360>Rev>PS3
Get a life SONY Noobs! You just can't admit that SONY made a huge mistake this time. 400-800$?! What the hell is SONY been smoking?! Not everyone can afford the system thus INSTANT FAILURE! Some parts of Asia has been suffering now but even thought the case, they still going to buy the next gen console.
Let's take Philippines for example.
It is a poor country and and even though in their state, they still bought a PS2. Now, only Middle-Class and Rich-class can afford the PS2. Releasing PS3 for 400-800$ will be unfair for them. Only Rich-class people can only afford the system. Oh, and the Philippines is known for all PS noobs. Ask them what Gamecube is and they will ask you if it's edible.
Flame away SONY noobs! You will all bow down to Nintendo or Xbox
GC is kiddy because of Mario and Kirby games? Let me guess, Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime is also kiddy. Or mabey because Nintendo doesn't have third party support (for now)?
Mario games arnt very kiddy. You only say that because it has mario in it. If they jsut replaced it with different characters you wouldnt say a thing about it. Franchises are just a way to make a profit. You judge games on just looks. Very sad.
Good article though. Although i dont know all these facts im going to stick with "wait till they are all out and choose".
PS3 is going to be way to expensive for me. Saddly
There is nothing wrong with Mario games, who cares if they are kiddy?
YOU ARE PLAYING A VIDEO GAME SO BIG FUCKING DEAL IF IT IS "KIDDY"
this is very entertaining, the Nintendo fan boys making retards of themselves and the Sony fanboys making ass clowns out of them selves. While gamers just laugh and play all the good games on ALL SYSTEMS.
Maybe one day the sony queers boys and the Nintnedo fag boys will get together and make sweet monkey love to each others butts!!!!!!!
Who REALLY cares who wins next gen?
JUST care if you will have fun...
Now I command you all to continue the flaming!
Fanboys, read This before you start proclaiming "OMG THis totallyY prooves taht Ps3 is going to die, serious cuz this guy said it must be truez, lol I m rite!".
Read the facts, then learn how ignorant and wrong your predictions are.
It's obvious where the writer's bias is headed (with a name like Ninty Freak...), but this article brings some very interesting things.
To begin, there are various errors in the article (which have been already addressed by others), and a lot of what you say rides on pure speculation and wishful thinking. Seeing Sony's state right now, it's very hard to see them take such a deep dive. But Sony fanboys, do not celebrate yet, for I believe that Sony is at the peak of its popularity. I can't see them with much more market share either, so the only logical place to go is down.
About using history to make this article, remember the saying "History has a tendency of repeating itself". It happened on the N64 era (Trident Controller... not cool), and who says it won't happen here. And to the huy who says Sony isn't making mistakes... Who you think Sony is? Some sort of god? Face it... Blu-Ray... Cell... Cost... those will all make Sony suffer in the long run.
In the end, Sony will perhaps emerge victorious, but not without some mighty blows on their mega-market share. I predict they will lose AT LEAST 20% of their current share.
And to the guy who says Sony CAN fall back on 1st party and mentioned a lot of titles... mention 3 of those who were develoed by SCE internal group. Can't? That's because most (if not all) are 2nd party games, and (like someone else gladly pointed out) 2nd parties can jump ship. I know it's hard, but imagine Jak 4 on X360 or Revo. Well, Nintendo fanboys didn't thought they would see Rare game on any other console and look now...
Uh, no offense or anything, Ninty, but it seems to me like you do not know what you are talking about half of the time. Hell, you thought that the SNES was superior to the Sega Genesis! For your information: the SNES had a 16-bit graphical processor, its competitor featuring 18-bit. It was because of this that titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog could never be possible on the SNES. It was not powerful enough. ;)
I guess I only imagined there being a Sega Saturn. :)
This article is so fanboi its hard not to laugh when reading it. Granted, I expected as much from a nintendo fansite :)
The PS3 will be a fine console, I have no doubts about that. And I doubt development costs will be a major concern; if anything, it'll be easier to develop for the ps3 than the revolution (which is so top secret, they don't want to let developers know about it!) and the x360 (which has multiple cores).
The only real concern most people will have is the cost of the system. The cost of the PSP is probably one of the main reasons the handheld is being dominated by the technologically inferior DS. Given the estimates on the cost of the PS3 (which sony has all but confirmed), I suspect the system will run into the same trouble as the PSP. Although its really far too early to tell.
Great article. You definitly pointed out some good points there. With the information given it is very much possible that Sony will lose a lot and a lot of people with the PS3 especially with the price point but more importantly the complexity of the hardware. If it is as hard to develop for as you describe they WILL lose many 3rd parties and with that they will not be able to sell their over-priced over-hyped super computer/toaster/printer/cookie-maker/video game machine.
Hey, I got to point out that this guy isn't a compleate fanboy. In fact, half the dates are wrong. Even in nintendo's consols! A true fanboy would dedicate their lives litereally to nintendo. The sony fans who yelled coments such as "fanboy" and "Crappy article" are the real fanboys. They are just covering up for being sony fanboys. This article is great. It backs everything up. This article is almost flawless except for just a little bit of inacuarate info. BUT before you go saying "Ha ha! It is inacurate! See?!" I am saying that there are just a few stuff such as wrong years. But that doesn't eliminate this guys point. Fanboys know nothing. They will just run out to the store with 200-300 bucks and then look at the PS3 and when they see the price tag they will go "WTF!!!!!!!!!!! (insert high price)?!!!!!! WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH THAT!!!!" Desperate fanboys will try to perswade a rich guy (if they aren't already rich) into buying them a PS3. Price matters. The fanboys who yell fanboy don't care. Gamespot (or some similer site) went and interveiwed some jappanese people and overal they said that they would be willing to pay about 200 or 250 dollors for a PS3. Looks like there will be a lot of unhappy kids when PS3 launches. Don't call me a fanboy. I was going to get a PS2 and an Xbox. The origonal playstation was something I really wanted but I got hyped by PS2. I didn't get a PS2 or an Xbox because my brother talked me out of it. By the time the Xbox's price dropped, my brother relized that they were going to come out with something new (Xbox360) very soon so he talked me out of getting an Xbox. I almost bought a PS2 but for some weird reason, I didn't buy one. I picked it up, started thinking "I am going to finally get it!" and for some weird reason, I just put it down...I don't know why. Plus I am making a little sega collection at the moment. But I want to save my monney for a revolution and an Xbox360 so my sega collection will be delayed for some time. I have got to get a gennisis. The games for it were so much fun! I will admit that I am a big fan of nintendo. (Especially the mario franchise. I am getting sick of those spin offs though. Thank god for new super mario bros) But the point is, I have to agree with the whole article. I am mentioning this info so you realize that even though I am a true nintendo fan, I am not a stupid fanboy. I'd change my Nsider name to fanboyhunter if I could! (I actually wanted to do that a while ago) If the price on PS3 does go down, then I will get it. But if its true and it is super expensive and stays super expensive with fancy fancy stuff that is not needed, than screw PS3, I am getting an Xbox360 and a revolution. SSB online for free?! Its a no brainer! Plus with the other info givin so far, I would say that the revolution is going to be a pretty dang good system. Another game that I am interested in is Gears Of War for the 360. Based on the trailer, that game will be one of the best war games made. And then there is Kilzone for PS3. Wow. Thats all I can say. It looks like such a good game! But if PS3 is out of my price range. Forget about it!
PS...Sony, come up with something origonal now. The name "Playstation" is getting a little too old now. Playstation, Playstation 2, Playstation Portable, Playstation 3. Come on! In fact, I am not even 100 percent sure that sony thought of that themselves.
its about the @#$%ing games presonaly i havent seen a ps2 game i wanted afew i thought were prety good but not worth getting the sistem nintendo has the francises i love and the xbox is best for FPS
and with the downlode play you get the clasics $250 for all the oldschool games hell ya
why are you online aguing with your head up your asses when insted you could play your game?
Wonderful. A new day is dawning, and the throne shall be taken back by those who had it so wrongly stolen. Playstation is all Nintendo anyway. Remember the SNES CD? Sony took off with Nintendo blueprints and stab them in the back like some reality show.
The Revolution is coming.
I think the majority of the posts on this argument come from people who are simply too sensitive. So what if someone thinks your favorite system's company is going to crash and burn? If nothing else has been "factually" proved during this very long list of back and forth arguments, it's that there's no such thing as undeniable, universal truth on this issue.
People can pull "facts" from all over, and in a case like this (a text-only internet forum filled with hotheaded game-lovers), something pulled out of someone's ass holds just as much weight as something that has research to back it. Basically, almost every post here has the fantasy wish to achieve respect from all the other posts by receiving the title of "Infallible Argument" or "I Have Been Completely Owned Textually for You Were Right the Whole Time." Now who on earth would ever admit to that? No one in this forum, that's for sure, because your big egos won't allow it.
But I don't even care about all of that. Often, it's the people with the big egos who have the hardest time dealing with criticism. What I want you all to understand is what I mentioned in the first sentence of my post. Don't be too sensitive and take an argument as a personal attack. If you enjoy a type of game, good for you. It shouldn't matter if other people think the same way, and you shouldn't have to defend the company of the games you enjoy.
Take solace in this, all of you: I firmly believe that whatever any of you find enjoyable about the games you love will stick around for as long as people like to play video games. The only gaming fact I really know backs this up: Sonic the Hedgehog, a series of games that is one of my favorites, was created by a company that, for whatever reason, suffered failing sales in the end and could not survive as an independent company. But the company had good ideas and thus, because of the pure fan love of the games they made, there was a way for Sonic games to continue to be made, and people like me could still play them. I don't care if Sega is dominating the market or is hanging by a thread. They make good games, dammit, and that's good enough for me. When it comes right down to it, it should be good enough for you guys too.
This is what I believe and you could argue that I'm being a hypocrite, hoping that I could say something everyone would respect and agree with. And if you think this, you'd be right, because what you think is truth to you. Just don't be close-minded. Because maybe, just maybe, if you opened up your thoughts a little wider, you'd find a truth that suits you and many others a little better.
Excellent, Very Informative. There isn't any doubt in my mind Nintendo will give Sony a run for their money. I've been a firm believer in the DS and it will win it's war w/ the PSP. I too believe that Sony's gaming products are to expensive for the average gamer. And I love the direction Nintendo is going in. I just hope everyone else recognizes their vision.
If nothing else has been "factually" proved during this very long list of back and forth arguments, it's that there's no such thing as undeniable, universal truth on this issue.
Yes there is. The undeniable truth is that every point made is invalid and incorrect. I've supplied you with the undeniable truth, so suck it up.
Really, this whole discusiion is people yelling back and forth at each other, calling each other 'biased'
To tell the truth, I think everyone's gonna at least slightly lean to one side or the other. I'm a Nintendo Fan, always was. But i will agree that Nintendo has made majot mistakes, like the ones pointed out in this article. And I agree, its become more of a 'kiddy' system really. But the games are still great. The generation of gamers now are mostly kids that like to play FPS's and GTA, they like the violence and such. Nintendo doesnt offer that. They offer decent games, but kids dont take interest much. Nintendo really has to rise above that, eliminate their title as the 'kiddy' game company, and rise back to the top. After all, the gaming market would most likely be dead if it wasnt for Nintendo to the rescue with their NES.
All of you guys should stop bitching xbox has this ps2 has that y dont you get both or just use emus but your all to proud too.
go cry your hearts out
Thank you!
