E3 2005 Nintendo Press Conference

Electronics Entertainment Expo is a joyous time for many. Thousands gather 'round to hear tales and prophecies of the future of gaming. As well, there is a plethora of gaming news that goes on in the Developer Boothes. But, there are other things that go on that people pay attention to, such as the press conferences for different companies. Allow me to elaborate some of the joyous things that came from Nintendo's press conference at E3 of 2005.

Along the many things that were shown, the most intriguing would have to be Nintendo's new console code name Revolution. With a simple, yet powerful looking architecture, The Revolution (Rev) is very small. In fact, it is the smallest of the three Next-Generation consoles. But this does not mean that you can sleep on the system. Reggie Fils-Aime has told us that it will be 2-3 more times powerful than the Nintendo Gamecube. This may not seem like a lot compared to the other systems, (XBox 360 16 times more powerful than XBox and PS3 35 more times powerful than PS2), but most of us know that was a conservative number. It's like christmas and birthdays, you can't give all the gifts at one time. Aside from the lack of showing a controller and giving away a spec sheet, Nintendo has wooed everybody with a fully backward compatible system. I don't think you heard me correctly, I said FULLY, meaning its compatible with Gamecube, Nintendo 64, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and Nintendo Entertainment System. You will be able to play all of the great games for those systems through downloading them to the Revolution's Flash Drive (or to your memory cards, whichever is not fully confirmed yet). On top of all that good news, the first title to be announced is Super Smash Bros. Championship, which is Wi-Fi enabled, meaning online. Can it get any better?

Another new piece of hardware was shown as well, The GameBoy Micro. It's not an entirely new system, but it has all the GBA capabilities. It's small sleek design is very sexy, and it will have changeable faceplates. The screen is smaller of that of a GBA SP, but its very vibrant and crisp looking, which makes it excel even more. When you power up the pint-sized system, the Start and Select buttons light up in a blue-ish hue. Nintendo says it may see a Fall of 2005 release, and no price has been confirmed yet.

O.k. Enough Hardware, WHERE ARE THE GAMES?! Oh, well they were there as well. At Nintendo's press conference, a couple DS games have been announced and shown. A lot of these games seemed intriguing, such as The New Super Mario Bros., which is a new Mario platformer, that seems to have some new and old elements. It has Wireless Multiplayer for up to four players, which may be leading to the return of the Princess and Toad.

Along with that game, Mario Kart and Tony Hawk were announced to be online. It was also stated that 25 companies were working on Online Titles. There was new footage of Metroid Prime Hunters that proved that there would be 6 other playable hunters, with their own unique Morph Ball abilities. Sonic Rush is Sega's new installment to the 2D classic series. The game uses both screens as the playing field, which should prove very interesting.

Last, but most definantly not least, was a new trailor for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which is the confirmed title. What can be seen in the trailer is, a rift seems to open up in time in space, dropping hideous monsters into Hyrule. Link is shown running to the aid of something, and falls to his knees, turning into a Wolf. It seems as though Link was capture and shackled, until a mysterious being shows up to free him. This being rides on Link's back, while slaying other worldly demons as well. The rest of the trailor shows other things such as horseback riding. One thing that I personally took notice to was, Link draws a boomerang esque item later on in the trailor. He seems to throw it, but instead a Whirlwind comes flying from it, engulfing the enemey. All of this has gotten me pumped up for its release in November of 2005, so you know that I will be first in line to get it.

Well folks, that's about it for Nintendo's Press Conference, be sure to check out coverage for the showfloor and Stay tuned for more information at DSUpdate during, and after E3.

Nintendo Behind in Technology?

Nintendo says that they are bringing a revolution to the gaming industry and most of us have come to accept that it will come. HOWEVER, those of us that are trying to think of HOW this console will be revolutionary are thinking too narrow-minded. I believe that it will not be ONE feature that will bring about a turning of the tides so to speak but it will be a compilation of SEVERAL new features that will combine to create a truly unbelievable experience. Several of them will probably make no difference to the user but will rather favor developers. Others, however, could very well shift the entire gaming experience.

Whether you realize it or not, Nintendo is not being left behind from a technological standpoint. Thus far, Nintendo has not followed the crowd in media format favoring an unorthodox proprietary format in favor of the new fad. Often, this has gotten Nintendo into trouble. However, this generation, Nintendo has finally moved into the 12 cm disks. How much data will they hold? This remains to be seen but my guess is that they will hold a fair amount. Also, traditionally, Nintendo has marketed first-party memory cards to save data to. However, by allowing the user to save data to an external SD card which can be read by a computer OR to a computer itself, Nintendo is starting to tighten bonds between the PC and the console market. This is another technological advancement for in the past, Nintendo has ignored the PC as a potential accessory to the gaming industry. 20 years of backwards compatibility through downloads will allow for a gaming experience like no other and will allow users to fully relive the glory days of Nintendo.

This is what we know. We also know that talented and proven companies such as Broadcom, ATI, IBM, and NEC are helping to truly create an incredible gaming experience for consumer and developer alike. Speculations have been made that Nintendo is taking advantage of cube-mapping technology in a new way to allow for amazing graphics not limited by the power of the console but by the power to render graphics on a PC. From what I understand, this powerful technology would allow developers to create in-game material from pre-rendered 2D images allowing for low development costs, low game costs, outstanding, cutting-edge graphics and room for more content on each disk! Patents have also been filed pointing to a technology used to capture a picture of your face and map it over the face of an in-game character! Wow! Nintendo also plans on launching an online service for playing online games on the DS and Revolution. When reviewing such achievements in technology from one generation to the next, the lack of a hard-disk and high-definition hardly compares.

However, Nintendo apparently hasn't shown nearly all of its cards yet. It still has a few aces up its sleeve...The Revolution continues to be shrouded in mystery and Nintendo shows no sign of budging anytime soon. The hype generated is enormous and the secretive strategy is surprisingly effective. The thing is though, even without knowledge of the truly revolutionary aspects of the console, from what we currently know, the Revolution already seems fit to compete fairly with the other two gaming jaugernaugts, the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. Therefore, everything that is revealed from here on out will only give Nintendo the edge...Or so I think. Many disagree for they argue that by failing to implement technologies such as the ability to play media disks, music, and videos on then console, Nintendo is failing to catch onto the trend. I, however, disagree. When I shop for a game console, I shop for a machine that will play top-quality titles made by trusted developers that I am sure will satisfy my gaming needs. I do NOT shop for an all-in-one console that combines a home theater into one box. That only leaves less room for gaming and can only raise the price. I think that the gaming-only strategy on Nintendo is the right one to take.

But just what IS the revolutionary aspect of the console? Many suggestions have been made...The most popular being VR helmets, pressure-sensitive controllers, and gyroscopic controllers for the controller supposedly is where the true revolution lies. VR will not happen; the concept is blocked by key flaws such as the gamer running into walls while playing. Pressure sensitivity and gyros are very likely but they will not make or break a console...Nintendo would not market an entire console around such features. Touch-screens have been ruled out and supposedly, the controller will NOT feature traditional aspects such as A+B buttons and the D-Pad. Rumors are floating around about a glove-and-handle controller but still, nothing is proven. IF this is the answer to the riddle, it truly would stir up a revolution but I tend to think that it is not because Nintendo claims that the competing companies would be able to copy the revolutionary aspect in a short amount of time but a glove-handle controller would take loads of time to reproduce. I think that whatever the controller is, nobody here can guess it. Therefore, it is a waste of time.

Despite the impressive reservoir of technologies that has already been presented to back the Revolution, I believe that still more new concepts will be introduced. For example, I think that Nintendo may use wireless transmitters/receivers to broadcast AV signals rather than the traditional AV cables of past consoles. This would allow a user to place the console in whatever location they want without it getting in the way...Something that seems to agree with Nintendo's current philosophy. In addition, Nintendo has managed to create a small, affordable, and over-all quiet console that looks great.

Overall, many say that Nintendo is behind in technology, but this is only because they fail to see the many fantastic technologies that are being implemented into the Revolution. As I said, the console is still shrouded in a thick fog of mystery and that fog still conceals several features yet to be announced that will further Nintendo's chances of winning this console war. For those of you that are still worried: Have faith. When Nintendo shows their cards and takes the pot, you won't have to worry anymore.
